Some say that the best way to travel is by train. It’s comfortable, usually hassle-free and full of great views. There are many stunning train trips that tourists often rave about, but according to some, no journey is as beautiful as the one connecting Norway’s capital Oslo to Bergen.
The Bergen Line, operated by VY, Norway’s main train company, stretches for 292 miles between Oslo and Bergen. It was built in 1909 and crosses the Hardangervidda plateau, which is Europe’s largest mountain plateau. The Bergen Line is Northern Europe’s highest railway line, reaching 1,237 metres above sea level. The highest station along the route is Finse, sitting at 1,222 metres.
According to VY, the train journey offers one of the most spectacular experiences in Europe.
It starts in Norway’s beautiful capital of Oslo that has everything from gorgeous beaches and lakes to mountains and ski jumps.
It then passes through Hardangervidda National Park and offers views of mountains, lakes, valleys and even glaciers.
Passengers might also spot Arctic foxes, snow owls and the largest wild reindeer herd in Europe.
The scenery changes dramatically along the way, from forested inland areas to rugged highlands and deep fjords.
There are four to six departures a day, and the journey takes between six and seven hours depending on the service.
The Bergen Line also passes through 182 tunnels, including the six-mile-long Finse tunnel.
Travellers can stop off along the way at ski resorts like Gol, Geilo and Voss.
In the summer, hiking and cycling are popular, especially on the famous Rallar Road which runs near parts of the track.
At Myrdal, passengers can also switch to the Flåm Railway for a detour down to the fjords.
The Flåm Railway is one of the steepest railway lines in the world and offers incredible views of waterfalls and mountain valleys.
The final stretch of the Bergen Line takes passengers through the Ulriken tunnel before arriving in the city of Bergen.
The city, founded in 1070, is famous for its colourful old town, seafaring history and easy access to Norway’s fjords.
Many who have travelled on the Bergen Line describe it as the world’s most beautiful train journey, and it remains one of Norway’s top attractions for visitors looking to see the country’s natural beauty.
Ticket prices vary depending on when a booking is made and for what day. One way ticket usually costs around £80 per person. Tickets can be found here.
