  1. The constant conservative tactic of saying inflammatory things and then falling back on “I only said [innocuous thing]” is so tiresome and transparent, but it seems to work so we’ll keep seeing it.

  2. I mean even at face value: pride in your country is literally thinking you’re better than others because of the place you were born.

Furthermore if you are proud of British history then you have a bizarre kinda bias where you say “I know we did a bunch of terrible things, but it’s still right to be proud of your country”.

Both of these things are a style of prejudice i.e. forming beliefs irrespective of evidence.

Hence, even apart from the blatant appeal to the Gammon Brain, the actual statement is fucking bullshit. Nationalism IS prejudice.

“Well there’s a difference between nationalism and patriotism” – no, those are two different words for the same thing. Nationalism is when you don’t like it, patriotism is when you do. I tend not to use the word patriotism at all.

I am glad to be associated with the millions of wonderful people that inhabit the UK, there is plenty to love about Britishness, the British isles (probably NI too, never been there!) and British people. But “pride in your country” is a fucking moronic concept for fucking idiots. Invented to get people to kill each other. Perpetuated through the centuries for equally evil purposes.

  3. I like it. Not sure about the dog whistle comment though. That ‘dog whistle’ comment is exactly that, not the advert

  4. I can be proud of individuals, as a country we have a bloody long way to go.

  5. “Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious” Oscar Wilde.

  6. There’s nothing wrong with this. Just like there’s nothing wrong with people saying they don’t want their local culture being replaced by one that’s incompatible with typically British values. Doesn’t make them racist, and labelling them as such just drives more people to think that way.

  7. I think it’s an annoying centrist take. It’s playing both “Why can’t we be proud of our country without being called racist” but also “since when was being proud of your country mean you have to hate immigrants?” Also a pride and prejudice joke? Just big Oxbridge energy.

The Telegraph is just The Sun with a suit and tie on.

  8. Covering their asses by saying it’s them “showing pride for their country”. Next they’re gonna say “I’m not racist I have black friends”

  9. As if the Telegraph and its owners have any pride in the country. All they do is moan about how shit it is and avoid paying taxes.

  10. yikes “we speak your mind”, speak for yourselves, telegraph doesn’t speak my mind at all. These slogans are what makes assholes think everyone is as ignorant as they are.

  11. The Telegraph really is a pile of shit.
It’s not much better than those tabloids we complain about and certainly feels like it’s lost the right to be called a paper of record.

  12. Near where I am. I’m fairly sure I could reach that with a can of paint.

  13. The point of contention is not whether you have pride in your country, it’s about what you have pride in.

Off the top of my head here are some things that make me proud to be British: Sausage rolls, bass music, the works and legacy of isambard kingdom brunel, the british royal societies, our libraries, our self-deprecative humour etc etc

I could go on but you get the point. Everyone will have their own list and sometimes some of those lists have dodgy things in them.

Saying ‘wait…you are patriotic because of *THAT?!*’ is not an attack on patriotism itself, it’s a disagreement about what we should be proud of.

  14. Bit harsh, there are some who believe people should feel only bad about being British.

  15. It’s just on netting isn’t it? It’d be a shame if sections were cut out to show a different message.

    – pride – in – prejudice.

    The Telegraph

  16. Since people wearing Union Jacks started lobbing bricks at my gran’s takeaway.

  17. I always love it when the right and centrists talk about pride in their country and being proud to be British. Meanwhile those same cunts are selling off your utilities and assets to every foreigner with 2pence to rub together. Bowing to the whims of the Yanks, the Israelis, the Russians (the Tories were so in bed with Oligarchs it was unreal).

They don’t know what patriotism is and if they did, they’d sell it

  18. One of the greatness of Great Britain is its history of integrating other cultures and being open to change without losing its identity…with London being the best testament of this: I am proud of that!

  19. I read that wrong at first, like an admonishment. I.e. to mean something like: “how on earth has our pride in our country become prejudice?”

And I thought, good for them!

…then I read it again and realised what they really meant.

Insecure, gammony louts masquerading as journalists.

  20. It’s a good fucking question. This country is full of hate and prejudice. It’s almost a crime to be open minded and free spirited.

  21. Since the same people who demand you to have “pride” in your own country also tend to be massively racist. The “pride” they want is a return to 1940s.

How can I be prideful of a country where the far-right are on the rise? The same lot who claim Churchill was a great man whilst doing Nazi salutes?

Feck the Torygraph, which now looks like the ReformGraph.

  22. Ah yes, talking about prejudice is pretty ironic from the Torygraph

  23. Whilst I don’t necessarily disagree with the premise, I do doubt the authenticity of the message given the messenger.
