So, I get the sentiment, but those expenses include having constituency offices and paid staff for them as well as things which may be frivolous. I’m all up for honest MPs, but I’m also keen for them to have constituency offices and fairly remuneration staff.
They’re not benefits they’re expenses. MP’s are underpaid compared to anybody in the private sector with a similar workload and responsibilities.
I personally think MP’s should be paid considerably more than they are but they are not allowed to own/profit/work in any other field other than politics while they remain elected.
Expenses aren’t benefits. Do you pay the electricity bill and whatnot at your workplace yourself?
They are paid what they are paid and have access to expenses to avoid the temptation of bribery and corruption. Look at the corruption of officials in Russia and former Soviet Countries
When you under pay your political leaders they are very vulnerable to other income promises. Stuff like this is surface level thinking. Also MPs who have worked in a profession with similar salary levels will not enter politics, so you get a body of MPs with limited broad experience of leading outside of politics.
Entitlement + if you set the rules why set them against yourself
Source please?
Because they’re the legislature of a populous, rich country.
I propose a tower block be built to house all MPs during their visits to London. Along with a bus too and from parliament.
No more London second homes. They’re free to use the subsidised cafeteria at the MP tower. Further expenses are to come from their own pocket. They get the bare minimum to do their job, just like every benefit recipient gets a calculated bare minimum to live.
So many comments here are just plain nuts.
I get it, you don’t like MP’s, but all this “they should be on minimum wage with no expenses” is just stupid.
