Transgender cyclist will not take part in event

  1. I find im torn when it comes to transgender people and competitive sport.

On the one hand, im generally supportive of trans rights in terms of how society views them. If somebody transitions then imo they should absolutely be treated as their chosen gender.

However, competitive sport is based on a set of arbitrary rules those competing agree to, and this woman was born biologically male and went through male puberty. That means her lungs, heart and muscles give her a biological advantage that isn’t undone by HRT.

I kind of feel like, just as a doctor wouldn’t be expected to overlook this persons biologically male origins if it was relevant for their health, perhaps competitive sport is one area that its okay to discriminate – to compete in a biologically female event you need to be biologically female, and if you’re trans you compete in unisex or trans specific events?

Whatever way you go some people will be very unhappy, at least with professional sport is affects a minimal number of people. There are ongoing battles for trans rights of far greater importance.
