In my ancestor's death record from 1892, it gives her birth place as "Mühlingen in Anhalt". Is it safe to assume that this is present day Großmühlingen? Her husband was from nearby Gommern, so it seems like a reasonable assumption, but since I am seeking out an exact location in order to do more research, I am seeking confirmation that my assumption is on the right track.

  1. It’s possible, but there had been a distinction between “Groß Mühlingen” and “Klein Mühlingen” for centuries by then. I’d say it was quite likely, as the only other Mühlingen in Germany is nowhere near Anhalt.

  2. It’s not safe to assume that she is from Großmühlingen specifically. Until 1918 the Grafschaft Mühlingen extisted which covers several little villages, Großmühlingen and Kleinmühlingen being part of them. “Mühlingen in Anhalt” probably refers to the Grafschaft itself.
