ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Association for European Journalists (AEJ) plans to open a centre to monitor press freedom in the Kurdistan Region.
“At the invitation of our organization, a delegation from the Association of European Journalists has visited the Kurdistan Region and during their three-day stay, they participated in several media activities and meetings with officials of the Kurdistan Region,” Hozan Qadir, head of the Reporters’ Organization for Rights and Development, told Rudaw on Saturday.
He said AEJ plans to open a monitoring center to track the status of freedom of expression and journalism in the Kurdistan Region.
The centre will also offer training, according to AEJ President Arber Hitaj.
“It is a window for mutual understanding and conducting training courses in the Kurdistan Region and vice versa in European countries,” Hitaj told Rudaw.
The AEJ, founded in 1962, is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting press freedom and professional standards. With national sections in more than 20 countries, it represents journalists across print, broadcast, and digital media.
It holds non-governmental status with both UNESCO and the Council of Europe.
