Broken gas line triggers evacuations in Burlington
A natural gas line was broken in downtown Burlington while working on the Main St. construction project.

IT SORT OF BLENDS IN WITH THE CONSTRUCTION, BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, CREWS ARE HERE WORKING ON THE GAS LEAK. NOW, WE’RE TOLD THE GAS IN THE AREA WAS SHUT DOWN EARLIER TODAY, AFFECTING ABOUT 250 GAS METERS ACROSS THE CITY. AND SD IRELAND. EXCAVATOR STRUCK A FOUR INCH GAS SUPPLY LINE HERE AT THE INTERSECTION OF MAIN AND CHURCH STREETS. WE’RE TOLD THEY WERE WORKING ON THE MAIN STREET CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. FIRE CREWS GOT TO THE SCENE AND BEGAN EVACUATING THE AREA, CHECKING IN ON LOCAL BUSINESSES IN THE AREA FOR NATURAL GAS AND, IF NECESSARY, EVACUATING THOSE AS WELL. Vermont Gas was repairing a gas line in Burlington after it was broken by an excavator while working on Main Street.This happened right before 10 a.m. Friday morning near Church Street. When fire crews arrived, they found an SD Ireland excavator working on the downtown construction project that struck the 4-inch gas line.Fire crews evacuated the area and checked all businesses near the intersection of Main and Church streets for natural gas. Some were evacuated as a result.Gas was shut off between South Winooski Avenue and St. Paul Street, as well as between Bank Street and King Street.The outages were resolved throughout the evening, with Vermont Gas completing repairs just before 3 p.m.
