Mine is and always will be Carreg Cennen!
It’s not the most fanciest or famous but it’s stored in my memory of childhood days out which sparked my fascination.
So what’s yours and why?

Carreg Cennen is awesome. Nestled into a big hill with a tunnel into an underground cave. Hard to beat that!
Greyskull probably.
Ogmore by Sea
I love Carreg Cennen! I went there on my Birthday three years ago, what a lovely castle and location. Restormel Castle is another favourite.
Aberystwyth. I love walking through the front gate on clear nights and imagining the fortress at it’s full height
Dolwyddelan.
A flask of coffee, pork pies, and sandwiches there with my ex after a very soggy winter walk seemed to make it magical.
Skenfrith! For a swim and a picnic on a sunny day.
Conwy. Go stand on the towers next to the river and it is just so high up. Plus you can walk all the way around the top of the walls. The walled town is lovely too.
Newport, obviously.
Powis castle in Welshpool is fun. Lots of history and amazing gardens
Oystermouth, on the Gower, for childhood family holiday memories. Ice cream on the lawn in front of the castle, overlooking the town and the bay.
Caerffili castle of course
Harlech.
Same. Carreg Cennen makes me feel things like no other place in the world ❤️
Grosmont free to get in and the kids love running around it.
Aberystwyth
Thankful for this post as I’ll be visiting Wales in May. It’ll be my first visit and I’m pretty excited!
🏴🇨🇦
Conwy is an incredible castle and the view from the walls is beautiful.
Harlech feels like a place of myth and legend.
But my favourite has to be Gwrych in Abergele.
It was never a fortress but as kids we had the run of the place.
Conwy for the sake of nostalgia and it having been my childhood favourite. With an honourble mention going to Flint, if only because every time I go, I pair it with that lovely long hour-or-two walk along the riverside from there the dragon brazier thing in Bagillt, and back. For a free half-day out, it’s just fucking lovely.
My childhood stamping ground. And featured in the film The Eagle Has Landed, if memory serves correctly 👌
I’m lucky I live in Caerphilly. Got a half decent castle here. My favourite, however, is Raglan Castle. It’s such a beautiful building.
I have fond childhood memories of Carreg Cennen too.
Caerphilly Castle has always been a personal favourite. I love sitting on those wide stone walls overlooking the moat on a warm summer’s day, picturing the castle as it was.
Powis Castle is also a personal favourite. It’s so beautiful, and almost unique in Wales as a native-built castle that has remained intact through all these centuries.
Looks like it has great air conditioning in the summer!
Caldicot castle.
Oooh me and my friends used to have a challenge which was to go into the cave at Carreg Cennen with a candle or matches, go right to the end and then walk back out in the pitch black darkness…..
The castles I grew up with were Carreg Cennen, Dinefwr, Dryslwyn, and I know these don’t quite count, but Paxton’s Tower, and Carn Goch…
My favourite right now is Kidwelly castle.
Roy
Dolbadarn! ✌🏻
It’s not the grandest, but Manorbier is lovely, always have a soft spot for it
Carreg Cennen, no question
Castell Coch.
Although I’m somewhat biased, as we got married there 🙂
Love this too. A soft spot for Barry Castle as well. Its a partial ruin but was probably the first castle I saw.
Castle Greyskull called, they want their mystery back.
I’m a little biased because its right where I grew up but Denbigh castle is pretty cool. Particularly the stories of the boy in the well and goblin tower
Castell y bere. Its remote location is timeless.
Cricieth – biased because I’m from there.
Dryslwyn. Mainly because I discovered it completely by accident. Rode round a bend on a remote road, and suddenly saw these impressive ruins on a hilltop. Not a lot left but definitely worth a visit if passing nearby imo.
Abergavenny castle. It’s not grand, it’s not massive. But it’s got that *functional* feel about it. It *feels* bloodstained, you know it’s seen its fair share of battles
The Bridgend trilogy.. Coity, Ogmore and Newcastle. I did the double in one day of Gwrych and Conwy castles both amazing
Had a nice view of Carreg Cennen on my long walk today.
I love Harlech, we try and go every year, the view from the towers on a clear day is amazing, the cafe is ace, and it feels like the castles you heard stories about as a kid
