People Power Party presidential contender Han Dong-hoon on Monday vowed to help South Korea achieve a state of nuclear latency matching the level of its neighbor Japan.

Unveiling his defense and security policy plan at an event in South Chungcheong Province, Han highlighted the need to do so to bolster nuclear deterrence against North Korea.

Nuclear latency refers to a condition in which a country possesses all the necessary technology and expertise to develop nuclear weapons without actually acquiring them.

He added that he plans to secure a nuclear-powered submarine with the ability to operate for extended periods without refueling or resurfacing, to further bolster South Korea’s maritime defense capabilities.
