This method, while quick, takes away the joy of defrosting a freezer with a hairdryer. The joy as the ice starts to melt, being able to grab massive chunks, it’s wonderful.
I usually use 1-2 pots filled with boiling water, place them inside with towels at the bottom. Works a charm and will save lot of water. Plus is you could do this inside.
I like leaving the door open for half an hour, then giving little taps with my wee rubber mallet and watching giant chunks fall off.
This reminds me of that Tom and Jerry episode where they open the freezer, they freeze the kitchen and do a ice skating show.
Others would be waiving the hairdryer in their jammys with the TV on till lunchtime, what a guy!
Fridge wanker here. Good to see that nobody has mentioned defrosting using knives yet. I’m proud of you all.
My tried and trusted method is using meat cleaver to hack the ice off..
I genuinely can’t tell if this is a shit post? Is this something people need to do? I’ve never defrosted my freezer.
I could never drag my freezer out to the garden, it’s too big, who’s dragging their freezers out to the garden?
I don’t have a garden so I just waddle my freezer into the shower and do it there. There is something unsettling about seeing old peas and fishfinger breadcrumbs floating around in the tray!
But what about the drama of defrosting the freezer by bringing numerous bowls of hot water & towels, then taking them away to change them, like you’re one of the nuns in a tense episode of Call The Midwife?
Where’s all the loose peas and sweetcorn
For those of you that don’t fancy flooding your house, and much faster than pans of hot water:
I once used a peeler as a chisel and a tin opener as the hammer
I’m impressed you can get a freezer outside to do this. /flex
I defrosted my freezer once. Opened the door, put the tray down & waited…
15 mins later, ice is starting to melt… 😁
30 mins later, ice is still starting to melt… 🤔
An hour later, I’m pissed off because there is minimal meltage. WTF! 😠
Turns out I’d turned off the microwave plug socket, not the freezer socket next to it… 😭
Have you moved the freezer to do that? Make sure you let it settle for several hours once you move it back otherwise you’ll have a considerably less efficient freezer.
I use a heat gun. Fast as, gets the job done
Christ how have I never thought of this!
I live in the Southwest. This method would cost so much in water, it would be cheaper to buy a new freezer
Used to just turn it off open the door and then after a little while wiggle the ice until it broke free, all done in an hour usually.
Now I have a NoFrost freezer and I’ll never look back!
That is not just a freezer it is a freezest
I use a wallpaper scraper to chip away at the ice. I gently hit the ice and it makes it much easier to pick up chunks of ice rather than mopping up water. It doesn’t take that much time
I’ve never defrosted my freezer. My out of date food might go further out of date!
Bowls of hot water on different shelves. Takes about 1-2 hours, no chiseling involved
My kitchen would get very wet.
Missing on the experience of dislodging massive chunks with a knife until you cant feel your fingers anymore
Great idea
When we bought our house we just bought the first fridge freezer we found within our budget. It was great and we never had to defrost the freezer…I thought it was the new normal. (I had lived at home before, so it was never something I paid attention to)
Then it failed and we got a new one. It’s started all frosting up and needs de iced. I have no clue what to do, so it’s been left. Might need to sort it this weekend.
I use a hot/cold Dyson fan that I bought years ago. Does the job in about ten mins. Turn it on to hot, circulate, make coffee, empty bucket and done.
“This is, beyond science.”
My mum and I grab a knife and start stabbing the ice away
Terrific waste of water 👏
Detoxing can be hard, i wish the fridge luck
Gotta love a frost-free freezer! Thought it was a total gimmick when we bought ours (a cheapo Beko one about 9 years ago) but we’ve never once needed to defrost it and there’s zero ice build-up. Wizardry.
I need do this shit, me freezer is looking like fkn arctic tundra.
My freezer is so shiiit.
Definitely a cunning plan
I do mine in winter when it’s below freezing outside. Pack everything into freezer bags, and take them outside. If you get snow, pile it onto your bags. Freezer off, door open with a towel tucked underneath. Maybe leave a fan in front to circulate the air inside.
Had a new freezer installed in a new kitchen two years ago.
The bloody thing is frost free. How dare they take away the joy of eating everything in it, so I can turn it off for a few hours with cups of boiling water in it and a tray underneath to catch the water.
Now it just freezes food and doesn’t require any intervention at all…bastards.

Hm, good solution.
Built in unit, no garden, no hose. 😕
