Earlier this week, on Easter Monday, news broke that Pope Francis died at age 88.

The day before his death, the Pope shared a brief encounter with JD Vance that has since gone viral. In a video shared by The Associated Press, Vance could be heard telling the Pope, who had long been critical of the Trump administration: “I know you’ve not been feeling well, but it’s good to see you in better health.”

Given how soon after meeting Vance the Pope died, several internet users have since poked fun at the exchange — and comedian Bowen Yang has since weighed in on the jokes during an appearance on The View.

While speaking about how he recently parodied Vance during an Saturday Night Live skit, Bowen admitted that he initially didn’t want to portray the Vice President. “I just thought there would be better people for it,” he said. “It was my imposter syndrome. I was, like, ‘There are better people for this.’”

When The View cohosts assured Bowen that he “nailed” the skit, the comedian joked, “Look, the guy’s a pope killer, OK,” prompting a roar of laughter from the audience.

Needless to say, the hosts were seemingly caught off-guard by Bowen’s comment, with Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines turning around in their chair as they burst into fits of laughter.

Whoopi eventually said, “Someone had to say it,” while Joy Behar reassured viewers: “He doesn’t mean it literally. He’s just talking spiritually.”
