  1. Pic and the idea stolen from other sub. Original pic referred to Poland noth Lithuanian. The truth is that Russia celebrates the Unity Day on the 4 of November, which commemorates uprising which expelled Polish–Lithuanian occupation forces from Moscow ending the Time of Troubles.

  2. The “Day of Unity” commemorates the popular uprising where The People’s Militia expelled Polish–Lithuanian occupation forces from Moscow^1 in November 1612, and the turning point of the Polish-Russian War (1605–1618) and more generally the end of the Time of Troubles^2

The day’s name alludes to the idea that all classes of Russian society united to preserve Russian statehood when there was neither a tsar nor a patriarch to guide them.

^1 The Battle of Moscow was a series of two battles, which took place in Moscow, on September 1 and 3, 1612, during the Polish–Muscovite War. Its aftermath had a long-lasting impact on Russian society, creating the negative stereotype of Poland in Russia and, most notably, giving rise to the Romanov dynasty which ruled Russia for three centuries until the February Revolution in 1917.

^2 The Time of troubles was one of the most turbulent and violent periods in Russia history. In just 15 years, the crown changed hands 6 times. Estimates of total deaths caused by the conflict range from 1 to 1.2 million (~out of 6 million), while some areas of russia experienced population declines of over 50%. This was after a famine had killed 1/3rd the Russian population in 1602 (which used to be ~9 million in 1600).

  3. It should be understood that few people in Russia associate the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with Lithuania, and it is just as safe to say that we are celebrating liberation from Poland. We don’t even have a reference to countries in the name of the PLC, in Russia it written as “Rech Pospolitaya”, which literally means “common thing”, in fact it is just a translation from the Latin “Res public”

  4. He is not wrong.

Russia celebrates its Independence day on June 12th, when it was declared a state in 1990. It basically marks desintegration of USSR, so, it is independence from Lithuania among others.
