Luxembourg’s transport minister said private donors should come forward to save the country’s main traffic safety campaign group.

The future of the organisation, Sécurité Routière, was thrown into doubt after the Insurance Companies Association (ACA) said it would withdraw €275,000 in annual financing, which represents the majority of its budget.

“I regret the measure taken by the ACA,” Yuriko Backes (DP) said during a press conference on Monday. “That’s why I still want to talk to them about it.”

Backes said the Ministry of Mobility could potentially increase its contribution, but “I hope that other players will step in to support road safety.” Backes would not be drawn on precisely which organisations should come forward, leaving the decision on who to approach to Sécurité Routière.

Sécurité Routière was founded in 1960, runs the road safety campaigns widely seen across Luxembourg, and publishes often-cited accident statistics and reports.

The press conference was held to launch a traffic safety campaign with the motto “The road for all, the rules too”, which aims to make motorists more aware of sharing the road with cyclists.
