London Mayor slams ‘disgraceful’ plan to ‘force’ voters to provide photo ID

  1. Wonder which Tory has mates in the printing industry that they’re looking to hand a big contract to.

Complete waste of money trying to fix a none existent problem

  2. They say they want photo ID to combat voter fraud, which has been proven to be absolutely negligible.

They won’t do anything to solve our food bank crisis but will happily bring in something to solve a non-issue.

  3. This wouldn’t be so bad if they made it easier, especially for low income or ‘homeless’, to get ID. Even with a fixed address, with no guarantor that fits the criteria, it’s a real struggle for some people.

  4. A sensible question would be, has anyone *with the exception of Northern Ireland, where they are already a thing*, actually managed to obtain one of these voter ID’s?

I only say because all I keep seeing is people linking articles about the announcement from a year ago, but council’s don’t seem to have anything set up for them yet.

I mean Jesus.. if they are going to that trouble they might just as well offer a grant to help people either obtain or renew a passport/driver license considering their track record when it comes to giving out contracts means these cards will wind up costing as much if not more

Funny when you think of the shit storm when labour tried it on with ID’s

  5. The tories have got the same problem that Republicans in the US have. The more they impoverish and oppress people, the more likely they will vote for a left leaning party. To combat that they are coming up with ways to get rid of the protest vote …. gerrymandering and voter ID being two. I don’t think they can hold back the dissatisfied masses for very long with these despicable strategies.

  6. I would be in full support of this measure, if passports were provided by the government, and any reasonable expenses covered.

Passports should be free anyway, according to the UDHR, no one can stop you leaving your country, so why should you have to pay for passports, but that us a discussion for another time.

  7. This was in their manifesto (page 48 iirc). People voted for it. Maybe Khan should have been pointing this out 2 5 years ago.

  8. I don’t see why showing ID to vote is an issue. I bet he loves the idea of vaccine passports though.

  9. Can somebody explain to me why you need ID to open a bookies account and place a bet but not to vote? It seems very sensible in theory. But in reality I think ID must be free.

I do wonder how you operate in this day and age without photo ID tbh. I’ve had to provide it to open a bank account and many things even in my last few jobs I’ve had to bring it in on day 1.

  10. Photo ID’s are a ridiculous idea.! Now.. an IQ test I’d be up for because we keep voting these idiots in to mug us all off financially while there giving themselves 5k pay rises just before they allow energy providers to increase prices to ridiculous amounts even though they made crazy profits last year.. and the one before.. oh and the one before that.!
THE FACT IS, We’ve become self absorbed.! We don’t stick together anymore.. remember when pole tax was announced, the drama caused and how the nation stood as one.?
Look at the state of us all now.. community spirit is lost across the whole country, we don’t even argue when we know we’re getting screwed over.??
It’s almost shameful how we’ve devolved into a “yes sir” mentality.. and nothings going to change cos now our youth want to be tictok stars and insta ho’s.
    The entire system is fucked.!!!🤬

    I don’t have a solution but that’s my opinion..

  11. I never understand this fear in britain of ID cards. I still cannot understand why there aren’t personal ID numbers either

  12. I really don’t understand why this is such an issue to people. Almost every EU country requires voter ID in order to vote, Britain and America are among the few holdouts left in the world who don’t. Why is it an issue if the British government wants to bring it in, when almost everybody else already has?

EDIT: Seeing as I usually get downvoted for saying this, I’ll provide some sources.

  13. A clear voter suppression tactic. Seems they’re taking the shitter ideas from the GOP and running with them once they see the results they garner in the US.

  14. Could this not potentially backfire to a certain extent. How many little old ladies bussed in from the old people homes have photo ID? They all vote at least around here they do.

  15. We are one of the only countries in the western world not to have state ID cards for voting. Northern Ireland has had it since 2001

  16. Photo ID is incredibly easy to get and affordable. Even if it’s not if your on Universal Credit or similar benefits they will fund photo ID for you.

Your an actual clown if you think this is some cartoon villain scheme to rig voting or disenfranchise the poor. Conservatives have been in government for the last 12 years because Labour imploded and never recovered. Also nobody wants Count Binface as the next PM.

  17. So He is okay with vaccine passport but not voter ID? Can’t London mayor just make it free to make these voter IDs, he has a massive budget every year anyway, more than enough to do it for the poor if he cuts 1/3 of the ridiculous London fireworks budget.

  18. As a matter of interest, why when ever there is voter fraud, whether here in the UK or in the US it is always to the benefit of the left. So it a coincidence that the left are always the most vocal against ID?

Ami Horowitz in short a vox pop where leftwingers show how they really view black voters.

This is the US but the modern left here have the same attitude to the working class.

  19. I’d support this as long as it’s written into law that it will only exist in that we won’t have a national ID card scheme or that existing ID won’t be repurposed as such. In addition if people need a voting ID card it’s completely free for all.

Some of the voting irregularities in the Birmingham area alone in the recent past prove we need to sure up voting standards in this country. Anything else that can be done such as making it a paid day off for all, free public transport and free food ala Australia I’d approve of.

We need to make it as easy as possible for all who are legally allowed to vote and as hard as possible for those that aren’t.

  20. ELI5. Why is this an issue? We have to provide photo ID for much more menial transactions (buy alcohol, energy drinks in some cases, collecting items from a store!) why is this a problem? This seems like an absolutely obvious action to take just to sense check who is voting.

  21. Will be interesting to see if they accept an expired license as mine expired at end of 2021 and am still waiting on a new license. Have voted in every election from 1978 onwards.

  22. Its 2022, In my wallet right now are 4 pieces of photo I.d. (drivers licence, railway card, workers id, work licence). We willingly give our images to the likes of Google, amazon, apple etc. 76% of uk citizens have passports, 74% have drivers licences, you need photo id to get a mortgage, a bank account (or they create one for you).

The idea that this is somehow derogatory to certain classes is amazing to me, even if you haven’t any of the above then you will be given one for free, there’s no discrimination as much as sadiq likes stirring the racial divisionary pot.

  23. I’m quite curious to understand people view here. I come from Italy but now I have been living in the UK for the last few years, back home and mainly in all Europe you have to present a photo id to vote, which can just be a driving license. I can’t see anything wrong in that, don’t understand why this would impact anyone privacy or how the government would use this to collect more data (I guess government already has it) also on how this would make more difficult for the working class to vote.
But of course I’m influenced by my “European” background so really keen to learn your view.

Ps I’ll discard any comment pretending the UK view is the correct one I’m not interested in EU vs UK, no one is right or better is just different.

  24. If I recall correctly, in South Africa you can apply for your ID document from the age of 16, and there is no charge for the first one (it has no expiry date – this may have changed in recent years, currents Saffas, please correct me if I’m wrong – so unless it is lost/destroyed orsome other reason such as significant physical change, there is no particular reason for it to be reissued). The ID book/card is used as a valid form of identification for basically everything.

If South Africa can manage, why no the UK?
