Get a 1st Look at Houdini Musical The Impossible Man in Italy

The work made its world premiere at Sanremo’s Ariston Theatre.

Houdini musical The Impossible Man made its world premiere at Sanremo, Italy’s Ariston Theatre earlier this month, and Playbill has a first look at the new show, featuring Broadway alum Ryan Silverman as the famed escape artist. See video from the performance above and photos in the gallery below.

Producers are hoping to open a full run of the show October 31, 2026, marking the centennial of Houdini’s death, with details to be announced.

Federico Bellone (The Phantom of the Opera) has written and is directing the new musical, with music by Giovanni Maria Lori. The production features more than 20 stage illusions devised by Paolo Carta (Mary Poppins, Ghost), with choreography by Gillian Bruce (The Phantom of the Opera).

The work tells the story of Houdini by alternating between the illusionist’s final performance, in 1926, and several episodes from his past. Silverman starred as Houdini in the April performance, with Alice Mistroni as his wife, Bess; Lewis Griffiths as his brother, Theo; and Russell Spellman as the presenter of the annual séance for Houdini. The musical was performed in English.
