Ski resorts fight for future in the face of climate change • FRANCE 24 English

In 50 years, winter sports have transformed the mountains, bringing prosperity to local communities. But the French Alps are heating up twice as fast as the rest of the planet. At low and medium altitudes, the lack of snow is making skiing almost impossible. With the Alps losing their white coats due to warmer temperatures in winter, what future do smaller resorts really have?

  1. It’s also resort size. When these resorts started many of their clients were learning now most skiers can ski and want more terrain. But yes low and small is a bad combination.

  2. This climate catastrophe bs makes me angry and I’m ashamed that people are so gullible to believe it’s their fault. It’s a political invention, a scam. Yes, the climate is changing, it always has been and likely always will, but there’s nothing we can or should do about it.

  3. The low level resorts were always marginal.
Their only advantage over the higher resorts is that they were cheaper.
The high resorts are getting bigger and bigger investing in lifts, accommodation and snow making.
People don’t want to chance poor snow so just pay more for higher resorts with more runs.

  4. Depressing that this will put people out of work, depressing to see so many I’m all right Jack – pull up the ladder comments. The bottom line is that global warming is real, low resorts now, higher ones in 5/10 years and incredibly expensive.. actual cost/ environmental cost ..artificial snow is going to be a very temporary fix.

  5. During summer months some resorts here keep the lifts going carrying up mountain bicycles. Keeps the local restaurants and bars going.

  6. This year the season in Bulgaria (far from the alps in the Balkans) is great, but it’s sad because it’s an exception of a tendency that has been going for several years with each year bringing less and less snow ❄️ 😢 :/

  7. So funny how many people here are stating they have loads of snow and thus case closed. Er it's a trend but doesn't mean it won't ever snow or the effects of global warming hit straight away.

  8. It is so sad to see. In the last 10 years, the ski stations in the Jura are getting less and less snow. We used to ski there every weekend with my young children every winter, I am sure their kids will never get to ski there.
In the Alps, anything bellow 1500 is no longer reliably operable. You have to be above 1800m to have a chance and even then.
At this rate, skiing as an industry will not make the next 25 years. Maybe the only skiing will be in Alaska and in Antartica. It will be mostly night skiing.
We can only hope that the shutting down of the Gulf Stream will bring colder winters. That will cause other serious problems to agriculture…

  9. How about sea level, we in Pärnu, Estonia had lots of snow for the past few years it is allways a rollecoaster but rivers in ice sea shore in ice
