  1. I mean to be fair Russia struggles with 950k troops…

  2. How tf do they work that out? They better get their WW3 hats on

  3. And they think they can end their reliance on the US as they refuse to defend their own backyard.

  4. Those 25,000 would keep 100,000 Russians at bay tho

  5. Being from the UK it appalls me how poorly we have maintained our military.

  6. They wouldn’t struggle to do it if they actually tried to do it

  7. I will speak for France. France has had a professional army since the end of the Gulf War in the 90s. After the Cold War. I don’t understand why European countries are not restoring military service since we are in a new cold war. This would allow troops to be raised en masse. France has decided to develop its reserve of volunteers.

  8. The UK alone has 25 million men and women in the “fit for service” category. Take even half of that, and it still blows this 25k number out of the water. If war were to reach European countries, Europe as a whole could field so, so much more than 25k.

  9. From the article:

“Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the British chief of the defence staff, is said to have asked his counterparts on the Continent if they could put together a 64,000-strong force to send to the country in the event of a peace deal.”

The article is actually about answers/estimates Radakin received to a hypothetical question about a peace-keeping force. The headline is, judging from some of the comments here, click bait.

  10. They would, at first. But they would also be trained, armed, fed well and given a certain mission. Even after 3 years-plus the Russians can’t do this.

  11. European countries armies are lot smaller than i thought.

It’s why any notion of the EU taking on Russia in defense of Ukraine is a pipe dream.

  12. Europe has no excuse to sit on their hands. Relaying on US as deterrent is likely the cause of neglect of each and every European nation defensive and offensive forces. Russian tacticians are surely aware of this. This is also evident when looking at coalition of the willing why they are so hesitant, and frankly shy.
Maybe we deserve what’s coming to us, if this is true, and I think it is true then instead of quiet desperation Europeans should grow some balls, instead of loafing around hoping for a saviour or a deal take your fates in your hands.
The “saviour” is Trump who wants his dick in Europe’s ass. Choices need to be made and fast – looking at you UK, France, and Poland.

  13. Perhaps as an American I lack understanding. How are these numbers so low? The fight in Ukraine is 3 – 17 years deep.

  14. Committing only 25,000 sends a clear message to Putin that he can basically take Europe.

  15. Because we keep measuring our armies strength by how much money we spend but a lot of that money is spent on procurement, expensive weapons, special forces, naval forces and jet trainers. When it comes to how many men armed and equipped we can deploy … uhh .. uhh let’s have a meeting with some croissants in Paris to discuss

  16. Here is a dose of military reality towards peace keeping in Ukraine those 25,000 troops on the ground only gives between 5500-8000 combat rated troops to perform actual peace keeping duties. It could take upwards of 75,000 troops (25-30,000 combat rated) or more to establish the initial Demarcation lines after a war.

  17. sad that after three years, trumps madness and everything else, europe is still totally unprepared

  18. they wouldnt struggle to scrap every piece of moving russian equipment, bunkers , radar and command posts in Ukraine within 2 weeks while Ukraine retakes their land, though. slava Ukraini

  19. TEAM AMERICA, former world police here. We are on a 4 year hiatus so I hope Europe can come together and support their neighbor. We are having a…moment and might even need y’all’s help depending on how things go. We are trying to reign in the craziness but we elected a senile narcissist that wants to be king.

I’ll call my representatives to encourage continuous support for Ukraine but don’t expect much being the minority party. “America first” and all that jazz. Weird thing is we have people volunteering for the Ukrainian and Russian armies.

  20. Feels more like we lack the will. If you add up the EU countries military personnel it’s something like 2 million as I understand it from a peak of 3.4 during the cold war.

I appreciate a lot of these won’t be front line troops and some will be deployed elsewhere, some are defence… It still seems to me there is a disconnect between our troop numbers and what’s on the table.

If this is genuinely all we can muster then we need to seriously rethink our militaries.

  21. They would need to at least times that by 3 for rotation, Im guessing is one of the big hang ups. Could probably do 5,000 servicemen with expertise requested by Ukraine though. Maintenance of russia-facing automated defense product, including automated fire control of the border, could be good too. Idk how that maths, but wouldnt put as many european lives at risk at least. Im assuming the other hang up is the political gold stars on their chalkboards.

  22. Europe could do it but there is clearly a disconnect with the population.

I understand war is hell. But if you can’t deter the wolves, they’ll come knocking on your door.

Even the most civilized of nations can commit unspeakable acts when properly motivated.

  23. And this is why Europe needs to get seriously involved in this situation. It can’t even field a fraction of the size of army that Russia and Ukraine both have. What happens if Russia wins and suddenly has a million man army freed to?
