An industrial accident at Port Arthur LNG killed three workers and injured two others.
SABINE PASS, Texas — An industrial accident early Tuesday morning at the Port Arthur LNG site left three workers dead and two others injured, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
It happened around 2 a.m. at the construction site on Gulfway Drive in Sabine Pass, nearly 100 miles from Houston.
The incident involved Bechtel employees working on a scaffolding structure when it unexpectedly collapsed, causing three employees to fall.
Officials said two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third worker was transported to a nearby hospital but later died after going into cardiac arrest, Andre Ruby of City Ambulance told our sister station, KBMT.
The employee who died at the hospital was a 41-year-old man from Houston, Jefferson County Precinct One Justice of the Peace Ben Collins, Sr., told our sister station in Beaumont, KBMT.
Two additional workers who were still on the scaffolding at the time of the collapse were also taken to the hospital. They are expected to survive their injuries.
Officials have not released the identities of the deceased as they are still in the process of notifying next of kin.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified and is expected to lead the inquiry into what led to the deadly collapse.
According to a statement from Bechtel, all work at the site was immediately stopped following the incident, and all employees were sent home early.
