TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Marc Gerritsen emphasized his government’s commitment to supporting press freedom in Indonesia. This was expressed at the 2025 King’s Day Celebration held in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Gerritsen stated that interaction with the press or media is an important priority for the Dutch Embassy, because the country is very connected to the values of press freedom.

“You see around the world, the media is sometimes oppressed, feared, or their freedom is limited. We try around the world to support journalists with their rights, with their freedom, to help them and be protected,” said Gerritsen.

Although acknowledging that press freedom in Indonesia is quite good, Ambassador Gerritsen reminded that there is always room for improvement and attention, just like in the Netherlands. He emphasized the importance of interaction between the media and the government to overcome limitations in journalistic work.

On that occasion, Gerritsen also revealed that the Netherlands facilitates journalists’ connections with the government so that journalists know their rights and what to expect from the government.

“We want to make sure there are no misunderstandings and no areas where as media you cannot do your job properly,” said Gerritsen, emphasizing the importance of a supportive environment for journalists to carry out their profession effectively.
