For no reason, I suddenly remembered this iconic anti-smoking ad from 25 years ago

  1. “Britney! Britney, it’s Marvin. Your cousin, Marvin Spears! You know that new sound you’re looking for..? Well, listen to this!”

    [holds the receiver out]

  2. I would love to see NHS Scotland’s effectiveness review on this. My money would be on it having a massive reduction in teenage girl smokers whilst at the same time making literally every teenage boy start smoking, constantly, in the hope of meeting one of these girls.

  3. I remember this in high school and wondering why they trying to make smoking look cool

  4. They often use this in marketing/publicity college courses as an example of what not to do for an advert because it did the opposite of what was intended.

  5. I went for a policy job in Scottish Government around 2018 that was for anti smoking. We somehow got on to this and I said I probably remembered every word.

To which the lead interviewer replied: Sing it.

So I actually sang the whole thing in an interview. Most fun interview I’ve been a part of. Made the reserve list, but landed a job in project delivery straight after.
