At the end of the article it says “Additional housing may also be procured through “emergency powers” said Minister O’Brien.”

What are these emergency powers? Thanks

  1. Powers granted under the Emergency Powers act I’d imagine

    Maybe this one:

    >(g) authorise and provide for the acquisition, taking possession, control or user (either by agreement or compulsorily) by or on behalf of the State of any land or other property whatsoever;

  2. Probably fast track planning, or no planning at all.

    Maybe forcing contractors to work on housing rather than private developments . Although “nothing in this section shall authorise the imposition of….. Any form of industrial conscription……” Whatever that means.

    I mean technically the emergency powers act does allow state to take possession of any land or property.
    “Authorise and provide the acquisition, taking possession, control, or user (either by agreement or compulsory) by or on behalf of the state of any land or property whatsoever”

    I would think in only the most exceptional circumstances they would seize property/land.

  3. I’m glad that this is being done, however, I would be lying if there wasn’t a sour taste in my mouth over it.

    This country has had a housing crisis for years, a crisis that NIMBYS and archaic planning have contributed too.

    The statement that modular housing may be allowed particularly rubs me the wrong way. Why do coco’s across the country refuse planning for modular housing for Irish people?

    I live in a log cabin myself that doesn’t have planning. We were told it would be refused so built it anyways, not like they’d ever know. I know a lot of other people in a similar position to myself.

  4. They are gonna kick you out of your home and out the Ukrainians in…. Or they’ll seize large sites that have been laying vacant and repair them to use for leasing.

  5. During a time of war that effects the vital interests of the state (safety, order, and security) the Oireachtas can give the government emergency powers to supersede normal constitutional rights and obligations when needed even if the state is not a direct participant (Article 23.3.3). Under the original Emergency Powers Act from the Emergency/WW2 period that’s been shown to include the otherwise unconstitutional seizure of private property for the term of the Emergency and its fallout.

  6. If darragh walks into your gaf when you’re not home he takes it into state ownership. From the old forggten rule of “finders keepers”.

  7. It no wonder some of these ministers need Garda drivers.I also wonder if our army was bigger as some are pushing for would a government of this ilk turn it on it’s own people in some form of martial law.Sounds mad but not inconceivable.
