Host Seychelles makes its Beach Soccer World Cup debut against Belarus in a Group A matchup on Thursday.

The Paradise Arena made its way from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to Victoria on the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles for the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which opens on Thursday. Seychelles makes it World Cup debut when it takes on Belarus on Thursday in a Group A game. The Pirates have played internationally since 2014, but are 0-6 in Africa Cup of Nations play, last qualifying on 2021. The Belarusians are in their fourth World Cup, coming off their best finish after taking fourth place in Dubai in Feb. 2024.

Herald Kowlessur has coached Seychelles since 2023 and went 1-2 at the Council of Southern Africa tournament in March 2024, beating Saudi Arabia before losing to host South Africa and Malawi to fall short of advancing to the knockout stage.

Belarus qualified along with Portugal, Spain and Italy after the placement matches at October’s UEFA qualifying tournament were washed out in Cádiz, Spain. The national team qualified for its first World Cup in 2019, finishing 11th, and returned in 2021 with a 14th-place run. The team is captained by Ihar Bryshtel, while defender Vadzim Bokach looks to extend his national record of 105 caps.

Beach soccer is played by teams of five players, including a goalkeeper, on a sandy pitch that can be 38.3-40.5 yards long by 28.4-30.6 yards wide. Games are split into three 12-minute periods.
