Scunthorpe produces fresh iron while Port Talbot produces recycled iron
I don’t know the intricacies of one over the other but it feels more complicated than favourtism to me
It’s possible the double standard is because Westminster doesn’t care about Wales– it certainly plays into it–but the last steel works closing would be a national security issue while the second to last one wouldn’t be. The UK government isn’t going to allow its last steelworks to close. That would mean we’d be completely helpless if we got into a trade war with our main trading partners in steel.
The UK Labour government “failed to step in” for Port Talbot because the Blast furnace 1 and the coke ovens were shut before they took office.
If only all the people saying the government should have saved Port Talbot were as enthusiastic to own British made cars, then the government wouldn’t have had to do anything.
Snunthorpe will go under without direct subsidy.
Gov energy policy makes arc furnace uneconomic also, no chance, without subsidy, which everyone has to pay for.
Cheap energy is the only way out #deregulatenuclear.
