President Donald Trump has announced he is nominating Anthony Lomangino to the United States Postal Service (USPS) board of trustees.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “I will be nominating Anthony Lomangino to the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors. He built one of the most successful sanitation businesses in the country. He knows how to fix a problem—and the Postal Service has many! I know he will serve with great distinction.”

The USPS Board of Governors is the governing body of the United States Postal Service, and comprises of 11 members. It is responsible for setting rates, appointing the postmaster general and deputy postmaster general, and overseeing the Postal Service’s operations. They are appointed by the president and must be confirmed by the Senate.

Lomangino has been “involved” in multiple recycling and waste management companies in Florida, including Southern Waste Systems and LGL Recycling, according to a report by E&E News by Politico. In 2024, Southern Waste Systems donated nearly $8.9 million to Right for America, the super political action committee Lomangino co-founded to push for Trump’s reelection.

The New York Times has also reported he donated money to a legal-defense fund during the first Trump presidency for those involved in possible collusion between Russian officials and prominent members of the Trump campaign. Trump’s team did not conspire with Russia during the 2016 election, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 2019 report found.

During a campaign rally stop in Uniondale, New York, in September 2024, Trump said Lomangino was “one of the greats of all time.”

His wife, Lynda Lomangino, was earlier this year appointed to the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees. She has also donated money to Republican candidates in recent years, including hardline MAGA supporter and Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, U.S. Environment Agency head Lee Zeldin, and Ohio congressman Max Miller.

The USPS, which is older than the United States itself and is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, serves nearly 169 million addresses in the U.S., delivering more mail and packages than any other postal service in the world, according to its website.

It has been facing financial struggles in recent years, having implemented a 10-year plan to stabilize its situation in 2021. It reported a $9.5 billion loss in the fiscal year ending in September 2024, compared to a net loss of $6.5 billion in the fiscal year 2023.

The bulk of its annual $78.5 billion budget comes from customer fees, from the sale of goods such as stamps and payments for other delivery services, according to the Congressional Research Service. It made $25.4 billion in stamp sales in 2024, along with $32.2 billion in shipping and packages—its two largest revenue streams that accounted for more than half of its revenue last year.

Congress provides a relatively small annual appropriation—some $50 million in fiscal year 2023—to subsidize free and reduced-cost mail services.
