Up to 35,000 new homes may be needed to house Ukrainian refugees, says Housing Minister

  1. I don’t know the solution here. Obviously i recognise the necessity to take in the refugees fleeing war but also we can’t ignore the brutal housing crises situation and our own homeless.

Possibly when developing new areas, for every one property allocated to a refugee, one will be allocated to buy and one for social housing. Therefore, it would make for much more mixed developments in terms of demographics and hopefully go towards helping everyone. But I don’t have all the answers. Truly dire situation

  2. We’re a couple in good jobs who have had to move back in with a parent paying reduced rent to get the money together for a deposit. We’re a lot luckier than others.

Despite having watched prices rise across the board and knowing that this proposed plan is going to increase the cost of derelict houses and fixer uppers (yet another opportunity to compete with my tax money for properties). I absolutely feel that this is the right call to make. If we were ever to end up in the same position we would hope someone would help us too.

My biggest hope from this is we see a change in planning regulations around modular homes and the like. Make it easier for us to get planning for them too.

  3. I believe that FG would love to build houses to alleviate the pressure IF they could do so without scaring off all that investor money they love so much. Ultimately the housing crisis will be their undoing and they know that. However they are fearful of scaring off the funds and then they’d be stuck with the brunt of the development responsibility.

I think the refugee crisis has presented them with that opportunity to build without raising alarm bells. “Don’t worry lads, we’re not looking to interfere with the market long term. There’s no reason to get spooked. We’re just housing refugees.” Then lash out a load of houses.

    A guy can dream..

  4. Any chance of some emergency powers to suspend planning appeals?

Never waste a good crisis. Use this as an opportunity to suspend planning objections/observations and build build build.

Otherwise we will just have years of our own ongoing housing crisis on top of liveline callers saying how too many Ukrainians are moving to Ballyragget (“it’s awful Joe, it’s disrupting the community, yadda yadda”)

  5. When Irish citizens can’t afford heating or housing and are homeless but the government prioritizes other people….. hahahahah I love Ireland. Should have applied as an asylum seeker seeing when I migrated here. I would be treated like royalty
