Mark Carney says he will quickly call byelection for Pierre Poilievre, Alberta MP to resign

  1. When rightwingers win elections, they do everything they can to strip all power away from election opponents.

When leftwingers win elections, they do everything they can to empower their election opponents through acts of appeasement- er, I mean, “outreach”, and move their platform to the right as fast as they can.

It’s not a constant, but it sure happens enough to be frustrating to any leftwinger.

  2. Jesus, having a politician act with integrity and respecting the will of the people and the role of the opposition, it’s making me feel this weird sensation. Is it hope? No, it can’t be. It must be something else.

  3. Have the Conservatives decided whether they even want to keep PP on? I thought there was a lot of internal opposition to that idea. Also, it would be really really funny if this new riding still rejected PP. He is very unpopular with Liberals and Conservatives alike. Not a likeable fellow. Kind of like a yappy Chihuahua.

  4. So, they force another MP, in a safe seat, to resign, because his Party’s leader is a bad loser?

  5. Why is PP entitled to a seat somewhere when his constituents didn’t want him?

  6. Nothing screams strength like losing your own riding what a joke but the Conservatives

  7. PP telling reporters it’s “too early” and “they aren’t ready to mount a by-election” and “Carny’s pulling a fast one” in 5…4…3…

  8. This is Carney acting in good faith to minimize partisan politics that caused the Liberal Party many problems in the recent past.

Mark has been criticized for his willingness to work closely with Conservative Premiers like Ford, but its obvious he understands the economic challenges of negotiating the daunting transition of Canada away from trade partner reliance on the US, unwinding shared cross border energy supply, utility system interoperability and natural resource access reliability.

In a firm manner, with astonishing speed, Carney is sending a clear message to all Canadians, soverignty will not be disrespected, nor will Canada tolerate bully threats and naive attempts to whiplash global trade to suit the whims of a US president who clearly does not understand economics.

  9. So Pierre is going to go to the safest conservative riding in Alberta while Danielle smith is spewing more and more of the same independence nonsense while also actively waiting as long as possible to do the same thing for the Opposition leader in her province. Do not give a shit about anyone but themselves.

  10. I thought the Cons were for a meritocracy. If you don’t get hired, you look for a different job, not beg for them to put you in a cushy position elsewhere

  11. Rubs me the wrong way

He lost fair and square, party should just look for a new leader.

  12. I wonder what slogan PP will come up with now?

Bye-Bye Carney – Do we really need a prime minister who is going to call a by-election this early into his term?

No Politics Carney – Carney thinks politics are a game. We do not. Games are for children, not prime ministers.

  13. Alberta Premier Smith could follow Carney’s leadership and call a by-election so Nenshi can get a seat.

  14. This is Poilievre’s best chance but I’m not sure if it’s a good chance. He only really rose to prominence because he became an attack dog in the House of Commons so he needs to get back in for any shot. However we all saw from this last election that this dog is all bark and no bite. Poilievre begged for that election but he brought close to no substance to it.

His platform was late and sloppy, he’s still emulating Trump even after he became an existential threat to Canada and while Carney was talking hard numbers, Poilievre was still obsessed with culture war stuff and plastic straws.

Carney is really going to need to underperform for Poilievre to succeed during the party’s leadership review and the next election.

  15. Singh had no problem stepping down yet the conman still wants to grift. I guess this is what happens with career politicians

  16. Canadians sacrificed the NDP party to add support to the Liberals SPECIFICALLY to stop Poilievre from forming Government. In retrospect this WAS the correct thing to do. Dude is just toxic. Let’s see if he’s changed his stripes.

  17. liberals doing exactly what the conservative would never do for them, again.

  18. Reading between the lines, I think Carney knows Polievre is an albatross around his party’s neck.

  19. Carney’s probably better off with Poilievre winning the seat and remaining as leader anyway.

He just lost an election and his seat, it’s getting harder and harder to take him seriously (which was hard to begin with).

  20. A courtesy that would never be offered to you. Why to Liberals insist on being nice to conservatives and fascists who hate them

  21. Now the residents of that Alberta riding can find out just how well Pierre ignores his constituents. The man has worked in Ottawa for 20+ years and still couldn’t make time for his riding in *checks notes*…Ottawa.

Get ignored by the Cons, blame the Libs. The circle continues.

  22. Here’s a crazy idea…if a candidate can’t even win their seat, they should not be allowed to lead their party. How can they lead if they don’t have a seat? Calling a sham election to prop them up in a safe riding is ridiculous

  23. This is not the way.

He should be kicked to the curb for wasting 20 years of our tax money paying his salary to be a resentful bigot. He lost. Canadians don’t want him. Why the fuck are we even entertaining him as a serious person?

  24. Politicians always circumventing the will of the people

  25. Let people vote. If he wins then they can’t say shit to Carney and he’s harder to attack.

If PP loose then it’s permanent and his political ambitions is truly dead.

Carney is a man who weights things though.

  26. Why!?!? Why does the left “always” have to be the good guy?
Let him rot in his own mess

  27. This is a smart move on Carneys part. I like him even more now.

Pierre will have this thrown in his face in parliament if he returns to his shitty very un-parlimentarian bully smear tactics again.

It actually makes him a weak party leader now.

(also he’s not going to give a shit about the people in that riding – too rural for him to relate)

I bet he doesn’t survive the next vote for party leadership.

    Nice move Carney.

  28. Well yeah, the best possible thing for the Liberals would be Poilievre staying as the Opposition Leader instead of them appointing someone likeable or capable of leading and making policy decisions.

  29. As much as I wanted him to screw PP over and make him wait, Carney is a better man than I. I appreciate him being straight like that, it’s refreshing to see. Especially treating someone as unpleasant as Poilievre better than he deserves. Good job Mr. Mark!
