An “impressive” beach in Sussex has been tipped as a close-to-home alternative to one of the “most beautiful beaches” in Portugal.

Staycation experts at Holiday Cottages have explored some of the world’s most popular beach destinations and suggested hidden UK alternatives.

It is for those seeking a “taste of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, or South African beaches, but only have three days off”.

They said: “This way, you can soak up the seaside atmosphere and unwind without having to even board a plane.”

Sussex beach a ‘hidden alternative’ to Portugal hotspot

Camber Sands, near Rye in East Sussex, has been tipped as a great alternative to Praia do Guincho in Portugal.

Camber Sands is the only sand dune system in the county and is hugely popular with locals and visitors.

It is the beach’s impressive sand dunes that earn it the title of a duplicate to what is described as “one of the best and most beautiful beaches on the Lisbon coast”.

“The beach is very popular for beachcombing in the UK, as well as for watersports like wind and kite surfing for those looking to try something new this bank holiday.

“The sweeping dunes are in fact designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to how rich with wildlife and wildflowers they are, making a perfect beach destination for nature lovers and photographers.

“The surrounding area boasts charming coastal paths ideal for walking or cycling, with views that stretch across Romney Marsh and beyond.

“Nearby, the historic town of Rye invites visitors to explore its cobbled streets, independent shops, and traditional inns, an ideal setting for a hearty meal after a day spent in the sun.”

“Very quiet here in April, not a soul around, kids loved flying kites and building sandcastles.

“Sea looked quite clean compared with other places we’ve been. I imagine it would be amazing in the height of summer.”
