Hi all,
So as for everybody who’s unlucky and their fixed contract has changed to a variable, I also was a bit shocked when I got my “eindafrekening”. I had a fixed contract at Mega till 18/11/2021 and since then I had a variable and eventually switched to another company on 28/02.
Now I got my final invoice from mega and as you can guess it’s mega veel.

But as you can see in amount of gas usage
5 months fixed I used: 3,152.18 kWh
3 months variable I used: 8,477.17 kWh
I know the last 3 months are in putteke winter, but still seems like a lot more.
How does Mega calculate this? Or is it with de natte vinger? can i do something about this or is this totally legit?
FYI
Last meter opname was in
I do heat my home/water/food with gas
This is from the year before, not 100% the same period

Why is your consumption so much higher this year?
Are the meterstand correct at the respective dates?
Did you communicate your meterstand when you switched fixed to variable?
Hello,
Silly question but have you checked what is on the gas counter to see if the figure at the top of invoice (numbers in black and red), matches with the figure on it? (or at least that counter is higher).
Not sure how someone could go from using 1.1MWh in a winter and 8.x in the next, unless you changed some habits, or was absent last year, or have a heater issue.
Bottom line they are supposed to charge on the difference between the start and the end (and then have rules on how consumption spreads). To me what is suspicious is the closing value and the difference VS last year.
When I switched from Mega to Engie, I had to give them my meter readings. Looks like they are using an estimate (which is “nattevingerwerk” like you say). Did you receive a letter asking to do a meter reading?
Always check if what they put on there is accurate. As said above, it looks like they use an estimate which will always work out in their favour.
Well, yes, you use a lot more gas in the winter, seeing as you are heating your home constantly. So unless you registered your actual meter count at the time, you can’t really claim any scamming.
I assume they base this on statistics based on Fluvius numbers. I guess you can ask them?
Also, it seems you gas usage on your previous bill was extremely low for some reason? That’s probably not a valid comparison.
Indeed, your energy provider does not know how much energy you consumed each day between two metering. So they will ‘calculate’/guess how much energy you used each day by assuming you follow the same profile as people in your region (i.e. more in winter than in summer). Those profiles per network are made available by the energy network managers.
They don’t pick the split themselves. It’s governed by regulators.

A supplier will also not ask you for meter readings during the switch, that’s Fluvius that sends you that letter. Suppliers have little to do with your meter readings in general, it’s a common misconception that they have any say in it.
When you switch provider, the network operator will ask you for a meter reading. If you don’t provide one they make a guess and forward that to both providers.
Login in your network operator customer portal to see what it says there, or call them.
According to vreg the average usage of GAS is about 17 000 kWh.Source: [https://www.vreg.be/nl/energieverbruik](https://www.vreg.be/nl/energieverbruik)
If we take the average of your 260 days of usage and make it a year, you wouldve used about:11629.3503 / 260 * 365 = **16 325.82 kWh**

Which seems perfectly inline with the average. (You even use slighty less) I didnt find any distribution numbers, but low gas usage from months 06 to 11 seems to be logical. Since you aren’t using as much gas in those months.
IIRC there is a table that specifies how much energy % is used on average during which months that these companies use to pro-rate the variable contracts. So yeah, nattevingerwerk. Digital meters fix this problem.
Had a bad experience with them as well.
They’re supposed to be the cheapest. We had a contract with them and payed more monthly (like a lot more) than with Engie to be sure we wouldn’t have to pay afterwards.
After about 10 monthes we had to pay €600 extra.
With the groepsaankoop of west-Vlaanderen I rejected the offer because fuck Mega.
I’m with MEGA too, watch out with them. I don’t trust them anymore. I have Electr. only, but the revised my yearly balance, increasing it by 50,-. I’m still in the process of checking this out.
Earlier, I got the whole raise of advance payment thing that I didn’t agree on, they started charging me for late payments while I was in the middle of re-settling the advance payment…
I’m on the brink of changing to another provider.
