Is that normal in Spain? Currently living in Tenerife and noticed that neighbour’s dog is in the balcony all the time. They are feeding him but there is shit and piss everywhere around. I was wondering if it’s allowed (and considered normal) to keep your dog in balcony. What should I do?

  1. That looks like neglect to me. Is there an animal support association you can contact ? Or see if the neighbor want to re-home the dog?

  2. 1000% illegal, and as it’s in the open and you have photo evidence you can do something about it by calling the police, the non-emergency line where they speak English is 902 102 112 (from a google search, hope it’s correct).

We have a neighbor (Madrid) who leaves his dog outside in a plot behind our building all summer to suffer in the heat, but the police say they can’t do anything unless we can prove it, which we can’t do in any legal way as we have no access to the plot.

IDK which animal rights groups are active in Tenerife, but surely its worth investigating and reaching out there as well.

  3. That is poop of several days, also seems like there is no food /water left? .

I suggest first try the friendly approach with someone that can communicate and if not ( soon better than later) go to the cops.

  4. Poor thing. In the pic, it looks like he’s out of water, too. This is not legal, but I don’t know if authorities will actually do anything about it. 💔

  5. You can download the application “Alertcops”, there you will find a section called “Animal Cruelty” where you can send photos and videos of the situation and have a chat with the police.

  6. Try contacting K9 or Live PAWS via Facebook. They’re dog shelters in Tenerife that I volunteer for. They’ll be able to advise you, but in most cases they recommend calling the police. That kind of thing is taken really seriously over here.

Both charities have plenty of English-speaking workers, so you don’t have to worry about the language barrier.

  7. I live in Tenerife as well and that is not normal at all, the island has a LOT of dogs so laws regarding dogs are very serious and people usually take care of their dog very well here. I agree with the rest, you should report it. Probably someone who adopted a dog as some kind of fad and got tired of it or just a person who should not have a dog.

A lot of my friends and family have dogs here and I have never seen them treating dogs like that, dogs are another family member first and foremost.

  8. One coworker of mine has a closed balcony ([like this](https://ventanasroma.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/cerramiento-terraza-ventanas-pvc-humanes-0.jpg)) with a dog house and a space heater. The dog is outside when they’re not home and at night, but it goes on walks several times a day and lives inside the apartment in the summer when the balcony gets too hot to be comfortable.

Your picture is clearly animal abuse, though. If you don’t want to put your name in the report try calling animal welfare NGOs in the area, sometimes they will make a police report for you.

  9. Definitely no. Maybe try contacting local police under animal abuse, this is not normal and i hope it is not legal either.

  10. Sometimes dogs are left in the balcony when you are not taking them out, many of them enjoy looking at the street etc. But to the point of them being surrounded by urine and feces is **not** ok, and basically animal abuse

  11. it’s also shit when they leave the dog alone indoors all day long. dog barks 12h/day and nobody can do shit because it stops barking when the owners are home and it’s during day hours, not night.

reported to police millions of times, to the HOA, to the building admin. nothing gets done. has been like this for the past 10 years

and sorry, but THANKS COVID because now owners are home almost 24/7 and the dog is quiet.

    oh and OP:

it’s not allowed and it’s animal abuse, but sadly it is actually “normal” in the sense that everyone is fucking doing it. dog owners around here are scum and disgusting people.

we have advertisings in TV because people buy their kids a puppy for christmas and then abandon or abuse it. like another poster said with links and everything: we’re top country with animal abandonement. ppl. here just don’t give two fucks about them.

people don’t have money for food, but they get dogs, without considering the maintenance and healthcare cost

our bedrooms face a park. a park with specific signs that dogs must be on a leash… guess what we have? people walking their dog at 2am and shouting like hell “come here come here” because the dog is not on a leash and running around.

coast towns are voting to allow dogs on the beach (which i agree with) but then the motherfu**ers dont pick up the dog shit and let them pee everywhere and let them run around without a leash, disturbing other people

in spain, decent dog owner to asshole owner ratio is around 1:9

  12. That is animal abuse, please call the police and show them the photos. You will have to file a complaint and they will open an investigation. It would also be good to contact a protective association of the city to follow the event.

  13. From a Spanish guy: That’s not normal AT ALL, and probably illegal. Report it to the police please.
It’s a shame that you get this impression… People usually just walk their dogs 2 or 3 times a day, and they do their stuff on the street, were technically you must pick it up and take it to the trash, but some idiots leave it on the sidewalk…
But that dog is just unattended, please report it

  14. In Spain animal protection laws are different depending on the region you are, so I’m not sure about Tenerife.

However, that’s not normal, that’s disgusting. Report that piece of shit to the police just in case.
