There should be a general rule of not issuing visas of any kind to nationals of countries that are not deemed safe countries for deportation.
Given how long study visas last you could enter when your country is fine, but find yourself leaving when it has descended into civil war. Surely the point here would be to just try and reduce how many asylum claims are allowed a year?
Good lord, this r/ really is becoming a solid home for the sort of characters one overhears (‘cos they’re loud and racist as fuck) at the local.
I mean, all this does is prove Reform right? If they knew this was going on why did no one stop it before. I am convinced both Tories and Labour want Farage as PM at this rate. I am convinced it would take a small number of polices to actually fix our immigration issue.
1. Any foreign national with a criminal conviction of any kind is removed. This will cover small boat crossings, I am confident you would see an almost overnight halting of crossings. It would also mean having an processing centre somewhere in France I would imagine, but at least we would be able to vet asylum seekers without them being in the UK, much like they do in Australia and what the EU are now trying to do. This allows us to meet our legal obligations and help people who actually need it.
2. Stop allowing non-citizens to sponsor VISA applications of any kind, including spouse/dependency VISAs.
3. Make the requirements for ILR more strict ( i.e. 10 or 15 years working and living in the UK **minimum** )
4. An outright ban on immigration from countries where an individual has a particularly high chance of committing crime in the UK, ( refer to the league table published by the Home Office )
5. Have a ” One in and One out ” rule so we have net neutral immigration until our public services and society at large can actually accommodate a larger population.
6. I would completely replace the Skilled worker VISA and merge it into an enhanced version of the global talent VISA, this would allow us to continue to attract highly skilled individuals but stop the shitshow we have seen with the scams of sponsorships from places like Nigeria where people are exploited and left in the shit by companies.
7. I would add caps to immigration numbers on individual countries, but with the caveat of much looser restrictions on like minded ‘western’ democracies, where people can much more easily assimilate and really become part of the community.
I would like to highlight that I do think immigration is a good thing in principle, but the way it has been handled in not only the UK, but all of Europe is a major factor in the rise of the far right. The reason people look past the general degeneracy you find in parties like the AfD, Le Pen and Reform UK is not because they particularly like them or are idiots ( anyone who just calls a reform voters idiots just because they vote reform are the very reason we are in this shit in the first place ) . It’s because on single issues like Immigration, they are the only ones who seem to put forth ideas the general public have been asking for. It is an utter failure of the Centre parties to have ignored it and pretended they would continue to win because, what was the alternative.
I hope Labour take the lessons of the Tory party destruction and sort themselves out before it’s to late. These above polices are pretty fair I think and I don’t see how it todays climate anyone can argue some pretty massive changes do not need to be made.
Lets be honest, they could probably make a list of countries where we should probably cap, restrict or outright reject student applicants from….
So saying Reform are bad but then following their policy that tells voters ‘we think they’re right tho’
Watched lot of parties make life harder in uk for immigrants and refugees and of anything cost of living got worse esp with brexit. Maybe try something else
They’re going to keep chasing Reform voters and then act shocked when their base has abandoned them
This should have happened a while ago (ie under Tories) because it’s obvious the system is being abused. It’s a shame it’s being framed as a response to Reform, which will make it inherently controversial. It’s just a sensible policy change.
Wait…I don’t understand, I thought the problem that Reform has been focusing on is people who arrive _illegally_ then apply for asylum, why is Labour cracking down on those who arrive _legally_. Are we trying to stop people from claiming asylum in this country altogether?
Better regulation of these fake universities would cut down on these claims massively but rather than going after the institutions who are taking money off people who could be considered in a vulnerable situation our government goes after the populist target.
I think the graduate visa should be limited to degrees and unis which have shown a good number of graduates getting good paying jobs (e.g. getting Skilled Worker visa eventually.) Hell maybe even base it on grades.
It’s absurd that anyone who can afford a student visa gets a free 2 year visa booster independent of anything.
