Tensions between India and Pakistan soar following Kashmir attack • FRANCE 24 English

During the day, the town of Chakoti seems peaceful. But war is on everyone’s minds. This part of Kashmir controlled by Pakistan is 3 kilometers away from the de facto border with India. Authorities have asked people to stock up on food in case the nighttime gunfire exchanges escalate further. We are with Pakistan. We are not going anywhere. We will stay here. We just need some shelter. Our children are here and we need shelter to protect the children. We will not take the initiative to fight. If they take the initiative, they will get such a response that every child will be sacrificed. But we will not allow any harm to come to the land of Pakistan. God willing. Gunfire exchanges started after an attack on civilians in the Indian administrated Kashmir that killed 26 people. New Delhi has accused Islamabad of being responsible which Pakistan’s leaders deny. While countries and international institutions have called to deescalate and resolve the issue through talks within India, there have been calls to respond to the killings by attacking Pakistani targets. We live under constant shelling. So we feel that if it happens now, maybe we’ll get to live peacefully for the next 10 to 20 years. India and Pakistan have shown they’re preparing for all options. India’s prime minister has given the army full operational freedom to strike while Pakistan shared images of its army training to fire 450 kilometer range missiles saying it is ready to retaliate in case of an Indian attack.

Tensions between the nuclear-armed arch-rivals have soared since India accused Pakistan of backing a shooting that killed 26 civilians on the Indian side of the disputed territory on April 22. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his military “full operational freedom” to respond while Islamabad stared test firing ballistic missiles.
