Finland could extend military call-ups to women

  1. If military/civil service remains voluntary for women, then this is absolutely a waste of resources. We’re talking about sending letters to tens of thousands of people, renting enough space for larger call-up events, buying more billable hours from doctors for checkups, asking for more hours from government officials for the interview process, employing more military police to enforce the necessity to participate in call-ups, etc.

If 80% (or whatever high %) of women just end up saying “don’t wanna”, then that’s money down the drain. All this is is a half-hearted measure taken in order to appear more equal among the sexes.

If you want to take steps towards full equality, then just give men and women equal responsibility for military/civil service. None of this virtue-signaling for me, thank you very much.

  2. As a male who has done his military service, this is road to more equality.

It’s funny how women call on equality, but when you bring up the military service that men must do or go to jail (if you refuse the longer civil service) they lose their minds.

There should be a similar lenght Lotta-Svärd style service for women that would focus on civil defence.

  3. The old societal contract of men bearing the duty of war and women bearing the duty of repopulation clearly has to be renegotiated. Finnish women do not want children anymore, which of course is fine and a liberty of theirs, but perhaps men do not want to go to war either.

A long awaited step in the right direction but the underlying discussion is still sweeped under the rug.

  4. This would be a step in the right direction. Sure, most women would still choose not to participate, but everyone would be better informed on how they could serve their country during a crisis.

  5. Gender equality swings both ways.

Im all for a progressive society, and that includes women in the army. If men have to do it, and women are equals to men, therefore they should join the military too.

  6. It’s moments like these when you realize feminists have zero interest in equality. What they actually mean is, I want to be equal to a ceo but with no effort.

  7. Get in NATO instead. Or get nukes.

The idea of having mass mobilized armies is a twenty century idea that became obsolete when the US tested the Trinity bomb.
