US Vice President JD Vance defended Donald Trump‘s social media post featuring an AI-generated image of the US President in papal attire, considering it merely humorous. Vance, who is himself a catholic, said that it should be “fine” with people telling jokes, and not with ones starting “stupid wars.”

“As a general rule, I’m fine with people telling jokes and not fine with people starting stupid wars that kill thousands of my countrymen,” Vance posted on X on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump had shared an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal attire, days after Trump attended Pope Francis‘ funeral and paid his respects, occupying a front-row seat in sunlit St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff, died on April 22 at the age of 88. The Vatican said Francis died of a stroke that put him into a coma and led his heart to fail.
While many social media users found the Trump‘s post humorous, several criticised it as insensitive. Users also accused Trump of mocking Pope Francis‘ death.

“This is disrespectful to the church and God himself… he’s literally the antichrist,” one person wrote in the comments.

“This is disgusting and entirely offensive,” another user wrote.

A third person wrote, “This is extremely disrespectful and narcissistic. republicans really voted for that.”

Another person commented, “How disrespectful to Catholics. That is what Trump and his maggots are all about, disrespect and meanness and stupidity. How dare you mock the process we Catholics go through to pick a new pope.”

‘I’d Like To Be Pope’: Trump

Recently, Trump was asked who he would like to see as the new head of the Catholic Church after Pope Francis’ demise. On this, Trump jokingly said, “I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice.”

The US president said he had “no preference” but suggested an American cardinal, who comes from New York, would be good for the role.

Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
