This is not about whether Harry and his family get any security. It’s about whether he gets full-time gun-toting security whenever he decides. If he wanted to see his family, or just visit the UK, just give the protection service a month to assess the level of protection needed and put it together. That seems super reasonable. Just plan your international trips in advance like all of the Royals do. You can still easily make it to Balmoral in the summer with your fam, safely.

If there is an unexpected event like an illness or a funeral, I’m sure they’d do their best to accommodate.

I understand the concern about an assassination risk from Al-Qaeda. And that he probably wants fully armed protection in the UK. But 1) I can’t imagine that they aren’t going to fully cover credible threats to the monarch’s son using the full range of British intelligence. 2) He’s getting the same protective level as Princess Anne, etc. It’s not a private protective force, it’s from the UK government. He doesn’t get whatever he wants just because he says he’ll pay for it. That is not only not how it works, it would be a terrible precedent

I can’t imagine there is any negligence at all here coming from UK security decisions. He is fully covered as long as he gives reasonable notice of a trip. He is not working for the government, so he does not get to dictate what level of protection he gets on the spur of the moment.

If he really wanted to see his father, it would be so easy. The path is already paved in gold: Say “I’m sorry Pa, it was a jerk thing to do to write that book. I’d love for you to meet your grandchildren. I can bring them without Meghan if you’d prefer. We can keep it just 2 days, and avoid heavy subjects, and I won’t leak to the press. I’m concerned about security, so maybe I can fly in right near Sandringham or Balmoral and spend all of our time on the grounds there to avoid my security concerns. I’ll give the 30 days notice if that works for you.”

So easy! Charles would fall over himself to make that happen in a heartbeat. But Harry is not at all willing to do that. It all has come with strings attached or a lack of ownership on Harry’s part or going to the press. Case in point his most recent interview which skirts the actual issues, and only focuses on his frustration.

As a side note, his face in this pic is tough to look at. SO much emotion, he just looks hurt and sad.

I really do feel for him, especially if C or C leaked to the press about him several years ago. I know he is sad and upset. But how upset he is seems to be more about him wanting to stay upset or hold a grudge after he was the one who wrote a tell-all about his notoriously private family. It’s odd to expect to have an extensive security detail for life in his position, when he opted to become a private citizen and moved out of the country. It all just feels too much like excuses, and the evidence we can see seems to support that.

The only way it makes sense for me is if Harry is really behaving irrationally, way out of proportion to any slights from his family. But I am very curious to gear other plausible perspectives. Obviously it is impossible to know.

  1. No, he can’t. He’s at the mercy of his family. He can request security 30 days in advance and his dad can deny it, as he did for a charity event Harry went to and was chased by paps.

Or if they approve it, his travel details will be leaked by palace sources as they always do.

Notice how Harry and Meghan’s announcements always stay secret now that they’re not part of KP? The palace is constantly leaking to the press and the royal family is ok with it.

  2. He’s a spoiled little boy who was never told ‘no.’ This is what happens when you don’t discipline a misbehaving toddler until he’s forty.

  3. But if he doesn’t want to have anything to do with them why is he entitled to anything. You gotta take both good and bad of stuff… its not his fault to be born in the messy family but if he wants to live a happy private life he can just stay away from limelight without updating anyone about where n how he is living…
He can afford a couple of bodyguard on his own with all the money they made by airing all his family’s dark secrets to the world…

  4. You say Charles would fall over himself to make it happen in a heartbeat. How can you possibly know that?! You have completely invented your own narrative here

  5. It always appeared to me that he has received really ugly threats for years, escalating significantly since he married and had children. That private security has restrictions in the UK, yes? Plus not trained the same way experienced UK police are when dealing with royals. I think he’s legitimately shook.

Harry also offered to pay the UK government privately for royal security and was turned down multiple times.  Don’t understand why that wasn’t considered as a fair option and respectful of UK taxpayers.

  6. He can’t seem to accept that he’s just a regular child of the King – like princess Anne when Elizabeth reined – and NOT the heir.

  7. Surly if someone wanted him, they could have gotten him when he’s out jogging about California.
He seems full of his own self-importance

  8. Actually he can’t. He can ask for the security but they can deny it for any reason they want.

  9. He’s obviously more than a little still traumatised by what happened to his mother, but honestly he needs therapy for it more than a security team. He’s just not that important no more, and I think he is having as hard a time handling that as his Uncle Andy had too.

He’s terrified someone is coming for him, but he is also terrified that nobody is coming for him, and he’s just not coping. Someone get this man a therapist.

  10. He doesn’t just want protection, he wants his IPP status back. This means that foreign governments have to provide him and his family with armed protection.

That what he meant in his statement that they caused other governments not to protect him.

  11. He has private security but he wants secret service level security, where his bodyguards would have access to the classified information the government has.

Honestly, for someone who is so concerned about his security, he should stop complaining about how unprotected he thinks he is. He’s going to give some nutter an idea.
