Workers worldwide rally for rights and social justice on May Day • FRANCE 24 English

marching for workers rights in Istanbul. But as demonstrators tried to reach Taxim Square, the traditional rallying spot for the Turkish left, riot police blocked the way. Since 2013, demonstrations there have been banned by the government. But on Mayday, voices are raised for democracy, too, as a show of support for the city’s jailed opposition mayor. International Workers Day or Labor Day is celebrated by thousands of people all over the world. Many are out protesting against low wages and high living costs. In Greece, trains, trams, and fairies were out of commission as workers called 24-hour work stoppages. The salary raises the government gave a joke. It’s breadcrumbs. We’re talking about €30 a month, €1 a day. That’s not enough even for daily expenses. Elsewhere, US President Donald Trump and his threatened tariffs loom large over rallies and marches. Uh tariff wars and the policies of Trump is a reminder that we should develop comprehensively our economy. We also have a reminder to our negotiators. Instead of offering a zero tariff, the first priority should be the protection of our producers. In Southeast Asia’s largest economy, some 200,000 people turned out for a rally at Jakarta National Monument Park. Indonesia’s president greeted workers and told the crowd he will eliminate poverty and corruption. More social justice, less inequality was also the motto for marchers in Seoul. Even the pouring rain couldn’t prevent the participants from making their voices heard.

Activists around the globe kick off May Day demonstrations on Thursday, pushing for better rights for workers and more social justice as they mark International Labour Day. In France, the main protest march kicked off in Paris with the CGT trade union, which is hosting some 260 rallies throughout the country, saying it was hoping for a “festive and combative” day. 1. Rich people don't like labor unions, you know why? But it is those union jobs that made America great in the past and provided a secure and livable wage to hard workers, bringing everyone up- not keeping them all down to cut costs.

  2. Not much for the working class in the U.S. to celebrate this May Day as the GOP has declared economic warfare against them, but unfortunately this pain has been largely self-inflicted because many of them voted for the Trump administration.

  3. 😂😂😂 Trump stopped their government slush fund out of america and now turning on their lying leaders. They're own betrayed them and need ibriam to save them. Good luck Ibriam😂💪🏾❤️
