Ukrainians torn as Zelensky says minerals deal with US ‘truly equal’ • FRANCE 24 English

Dozens gather in QE’s independent square demanding answers on the whereabouts of their loved ones missing in combat. This protest is yet another reminder of the devastating toll of the conflict in Ukraine. The country is desperate to secure its future, and a new minerals deal with the US might do just that. But some here aren’t convinced. In order for the war to stop, we have to pay something. We pay with human lives and with Ukrainian resources. It feels like Ukraine has been raped by everyone and it hurts. The deal gives the US the green light to exploit Ukraine’s vast mineral resources. In return, an investment fund earmarked for the war torn country will be created. Future military aid from Washington will count as part of the US’s investment into the fund. It’s terms that have left some Ukrainians feeling cautious optimism. I think interesting times await us. The deal has an advantage because I’ve heard that we will receive weapons and that’s crucial for our army. And maybe in the future there will be certain advantages in cooperating with the US. For Ukraine, the final terms are more favorable than those originally put forward by the US. Silinski has held the deal a victory. It is now truly an equitable agreement that creates many investment opportunities in Ukraine. It will enable major modernization of industries in Ukraine. This agreement does not create debt. It establishes a recovery fund that will invest in Ukraine and generate profits here. For many Ukrainians, the deal has raised hopes that if the US invests in Ukraine’s resources, then it will make protecting Ke’s interests a priority as peace deal negotiations with Russia continue.   4. War is so much business. Whenever US economy would go downward, they would invent an unrest to intervene.
    What happened with Ukraine? All the 'allies' disposed off near expiry, old-tech stuff in Ukraine to order new and shiny ones. The politicians must have made a lot of money in that and will make a lot of money in that. It was always a trap to usurp Ukraine's natural resources. Now the same countries and their politicians will make money from reconstruction also. Good job!

    What was the point of starting the war in the first place, and why did Ukraine play with fire when they knew that asking for NATO membership would ignite the conflict and they won’t get membership!
    Millions of lives lost and one of fifth of territory lost for what??
    It was much better to have a Russian president and have good relations with Russia instead of all this!
    What a disaster!

  42. All you had to do was not try to join NATO and all would still be well, but here we are, losing everything, both people and resources.
