Trump said he was authorising the US Trade Representative to start the process to impose the levy because America's movie industry was dying "a very fast death".

He blamed a "concerted effort" by other countries that offer incentives to attract filmmakers and studios, which he described as a "National Security threat". "It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!" Trump said on his Truth Social platform, external. "WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!"

R1: Scotland, and the UK, has a successful and growing film industry which alongside domestic production, attracts Hollywood productions to film here — this would likely impact that

  1. Scotland’s film industry has been growing, with Hollywood productions increasingly [filming in Scotland](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2elp53ygko), Batman, Avengers, and Indiana Jones being some recent big examples. A [Screen Scotland report](https://www.screendaily.com/news/screen-scotland-outlines-six-year-strategy-with-a-focus-on-economic-as-well-as-creative-growth/5191201.article) also estimated that the contribution of the screen sector in Scotland to the economy was £627Mn in 2021, and have a strategy to increase the GVA impact to £1Bn by 2030.

This was just announced in a social media post, so it’s unclear how or when it would be implemented but it could have a significant impact for Scotland and the UK’s film industry depending on what is eventually detailed (for example if a US based production filming outside of the US would constitute a tariff or not).

  2. Gee, do you think that non-USA production companies will benefit from this move?

  3. I’d rather they just focused on making good films instead. Too many paint by numbers super hero movies. Another thing you can’t film in American cities the economy is too large much easier to shut down Glasgow than New York.

  4. As someone from the US, and hoping to god the dollar doesn’t collapse and I’m actually able to afford my Masters program in Glasgow in September. The US empire is dying and Trump wants to drag down the entire west with it. I fucking hate it here, people so threatened by Queer people, neurodivergent people and brown people being treated as equal they voted for someone who will accelerate the collapse of the US and make sure he brings down everyone else with it, I want out of this godforsaken hell hole.

  5. How…do you tarriff a movie? More specifically in the age of streaming platforms? Cinema is essentially dead anyway…

  6. In some ways he isn’t wrong, production has been moving out of California for a while now and it is accelerating recently. Ben Affleck (not a Trump guy) has been talking about it. But it is due to tax breaks. Canada has always given them (a lot of based-in-the-US TV was always filmed in Canada) and other US states have started to get in on the act, e.g. Georgia. And over here Glasgow. But the issue is California isn’t following suit, so “x” dollars spent in Georgia or Glasgow gets more hours of footage than that same amount of dollars spent in California. What’s different recently, according to Affleck, is the production companies, the crew, the tech, they’ve been leaving California on masse too.

  7. I suppose he thinks all movies should be made in Hollywood, just like those good ‘ole days when America was great…

  8. I get how a tariff on a physical product works but would that work with something that can be digitally distributed ?

  9. So it’s not just every piece of Westminster news that gets spammed here now, but every piece of international news as well?

Here’s a suggestion; if you feel the first thing you have to do is mount a R1 defence, maybe don’t post the story here and leave it for UK subs.
