As the summer season approaches and holiday bookings increase, North Macedonia is becoming a popular choice for those seeking a less travelled destination. Situated in Europe and surrounded by Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania, North Macedonia may not be on every traveller’s list, but its peacefulness makes it a perfect choice for a tranquil getaway.

The country offers a rich blend of history, with influences from the Mediterranean, Balkans, Greece, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire, providing a unique cultural mix. Despite being one of Europe’s most distinctive countries, North Macedonia remains largely unexplored.

Although small in size, it is filled with beautiful natural landscapes.

Around 80 per cent of the country is covered with mountains and lakes, making it an ideal destination for adventure enthusiasts interested in hiking, cycling and kayaking.

For those who prefer to enjoy nature at a slower pace, North Macedonia is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including bears, wild boars, wolves, foxes, deer, and over 200 species of butterfly, reports the Mirror.

History enthusiasts can delve into the amphitheatres, statues, monasteries, and relics from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods.

The country’s rich historical influences have also led to a delicious culinary scene, according to the Express. The national dish, tavce gravce – a hearty baked bean dish – is a must-try.

Lake Ohrid and its surroundings can become quite busy during the summer peak, so if you’re seeking a peaceful getaway, this is something to consider. However, the rest of the country maintains an almost untouched aura.

In 2021, North Macedonia welcomed a total of 294,000 visitors according to recent tourist data, a stark contrast to neighbouring Greece which sees tens of millions annually.

North Macedonia bears many striking similarities with both Greece and Turkey.

However, this emerging hotspot is an excellent choice for those looking for an adventurous escape off the beaten tourist path.
