Do Americans watch a lot of foreign movies? Trump not only imposes 100% tariffs on movie imports, but claims that they are a “national security threat”.

  1. I think his issue is that a lot of movie production has been offshored, lots of filming and processing and such in other countries. There’s good YouTube videos and podcasts that get into the details about how much tax incentives go into luring this stuff away from California, plus lower labor costs elsewhere, including within the US. I am not the knowledgeable about this whole industry though.

    When I first read one of these headlines, I thought it was a joke, but now it’s making headlines on WSJ, and here. Who knows what he even means and what this will really look
    Like.

  4. Almost all AAA Hollywood films have scenes that are filmed outside the USA. There’s only so much you can film in a film studio. What does produce mean? All films legally sold in the US have a final production in the US because they all have to go through the US censor.

    The movie industry is DYING but not because of foreign influence or outsourcing of production. It is because the movies are bascially shit. Nothing original, only sequels and remakes and woke shit.

  7. 1) Significant chunk of American films and shows are physically produced outside of USA

    2) Netflix, Prime, linear TV have a huge library of foreign films and series available for Americans

    3) “Foreign” is a little bit of vague term. I don’t know much about American offshore practice, but in ex-USSR and some Eastern European countries it’s a very common practice, both as tax heaven and equity protection – physically domestic production by company registered in Cyprus, British Virgin Islands, British Jersy etc. Also many American movies are co-financed by foreign companies. So Trump theoretically could apply tariffs to “foreign” share of film’s budget. His post is vague and populist.

    Is it based on where it is filmed? Where it is edited?

    What if you have 2 minutes filmed in Europe and 98 in the us?

  16. This is punching yourself in the face to punish China for restricting US releases. He only knows the word “tariffs” and wants them on everything. He has no idea how the business around the film industry works and can’t imagine a product more conceptually advanced than something you can buy in a store. He can’t imagine a digital product, it’s too conceptually advanced. And no one in his inner circle has enough integrity to stand up and question his mad ramblings.

  17. Technological progress kills jobs.

    And then creates some other, new jobs.

    That’s what the internet, streaming and AI have done and will be doing on the US film industry.

    And just as with other sectors, like cars and manufacturing, he blames migrants, liberals and other countries. That feels better to many people. You need an external enemy. Makes things easy and let’s you feel good about yourself.

    It just won’t help anything. But that’s not what voting is about, people vote out of anger and frustration.
