My god, check if others have posted the same story before. I have already seen three posts on this, two of them made by the same person!
For a one year packet, thats kinda okay, tho double the amount would have probably been way more promissing in terms of result.
as if we hadn‘t the groupd scientists who needed that money …
€500 million and politicians wont be telling you your results are wrong.
“Hey, US scientists!”
“Wats up partner?”
“Wooooooo!”
I think it would be better to properly finance your own researchers instead of trying to recruit them from abroad 🙂
Edit: As many people seem to be missing the point, I’ll try to explain it better. It’s not about not recruiting Americans or other foreigners; the problem is that many research groups in the EU have funding problems or very low salaries . For that reason, I’d prioritize solving that issue first instead of bringing more researchers.
lol that’s hilariously small. I mean, Trump was trying to withhold $2 billion from just Harvard, which they are suing to get anyway – and will end up getting in the end
The US spends about $900B on R&D and universities have $1T in endowments, of which research spending is around 18% of disbursements from them.
Gonna take a lot more than €500M to make any sort of dent. Why not spend that money on more grants for promising young European researchers or expanding worthy projects? Or maybe poach international students who would have come to the states but now can’t get a US visa or sponsorship?
Is this what happens in the US when science is denied, research funding ends, universities are told which programs they can run? So it’s back to the 1890s for the US. End of vaccinations will solve a lot of problems.
This is not much, compared to research funding of the US. However, if that bet was on bringing all experts from a strategic, specific field (e.g., quantum computing or telecommunications or robotics), it may be enough. Europe may then become THE center of excellence for that field and would develop technologies with pretty much no outside competition.
Low number
> Shortly before, Aix Marseille University in the south of the country said its “Safe Place for Science” scheme received a flood of applicants after announcing in March it would open its doors to US scientists threatened by cuts.
That is a good sign. This won’t help reduce the gap to global tech companies, but open research can only be good for the continent.
Central planning vibes. I’m sure these funds won’t be misappropriated.
100% tax on scientific results from foreign countries!
I am glad for €500 or any investment into EU science. But it is hopelessly little in comparison to what US venture capital can invest. I think we won’t see any major exodus of scientist from US.
In response, Trump announces a one billion per cent tariff on importing EU scientists to deal with the scientist deficit.
Bad idea. Very.
Great now there will be a tariff on knowledge coming from foreign lands as well… thanks Obama
500m is a fart, come on. Put some real money into this please
Meanwhile in the Netherlands our right wing government (PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB) have cut 1 Billion euros for Education and Science…
Is this a joke?
The US cut $2.2 *billion* from Harvard alone.
Sorry EU, but 500 million € is not much…
If I were the EU, I would be wooing a lot more than just scientists. There’s a ton of people who would love to leave the US, me included.
How do these said people secure a long term visa, that if they lose jobs they aren’t kicked out and family has to pack up and leave?
Their children turn 18 now aren’t dependent so need to apply for visa or leave?
There are many researchers and projects in the Union that are half-baked, in some cases due to lack of funds.
It would be better to start and finish them.
And yes, at the same time, offer the yankee scientists the possibilities that are closed to them in the new middle age in america.
But let’s have priorities.
Innovation index is done in partnership with Cornell and has both subjective and objective data.
I did not say that the US is not ahead of the EU in tech. They obviously are. I was specifically addressing the comment about equating a 500 million euro targeted package to the total research commitment of an entire continent – that is bs and I think you know that.
I agree that more investments should be made in tech and research. I work in the field. But there is not a 1-1 relationship between money spent and returns. For several US tech companies, I’d also argue that market share for many US tech companies has in no small part been accomplished by US’ dominant position as a country, more than as a sheer measurement of innovation or the return on investments into innovation made by the US.
