  1. My school had this but we never fucking used it. I had no idea what is was and thought it was used for wiring for the yearly Christmas play

  2. Has this at primary (2007-2012ish). It was stacked against the wall in the main hall area. Honestly looked like it predated the 1970’s school building. It was never ever used, aside from the part with a rope on it.

  3. When my son (now 18) went to primary they still had the apparatus in the hall but it never came out.

Was a weekly thing for us (1980s). And ropes that descended from the ceiling to climb up, one knotted one not.

  4. My school had this, but don’t think it was ever used

  5. We had 2 sets of these in my primary and never once saw them used

  6. I think we were only allowed to use it once. I remember the excitement when it was unfurled from its tethers and then shitting myself when I climbed to the top and realised how high it was and how thin the crash mats were beneath me. I may have given my thighs rope burn sliding down the rope too. It was the one and only time the apparatus made an appearance.

  7. Used it once! It was just decoration for most of my primary years in the hall.

  8. this shit was so peak and yet they only brought it out once or twice a year (if youre lucky)

  9. I don’t remember the apparatus ever being out more than two or three times.

  10. We had it but only remember it being used once. Ours didn’t look nearly as clean and safe as that though 😂

  11. We had this at school 70’s-80’s the equipment came out usually towards the end of term… it was so that we could play ‘pirates’ .

Half the class were pirates, and the other half had to try and evade capture by climbing/jumping and swinging out of the way on the equipment, if you touched the floor you ‘drowned’ and were out . If one of the pirates caught you… you became a pirate.

Where was the Teacher you ask?……… standing at the back of the gym smoking and reading the sun 🤣🤣

  12. I went to primary school in the late 2000s/very early 2010s and I think I used it about five times in the six years I was there

  13. Both my primary and secondary schools had these, the secondary was a giant full wall one and even had aerial hoops/rings and climbing ropes, but did we ever get to use them?

    Fuck no.

Only time I ever saw the ones in primary in use was once, AS PART OF A PLAY OF “CHRISTMAS CAROL”, where they were used as set pieces. And in secondary? Only the “athletes” got to use them, the rest of us had the honor of watching them use it.

  14. I’m assuming that it is never used because schools fear legal action if a child gets injured. It makes me sad that if I have children, they will not get to experience this. I will just have to build one in the back garden, and hope they survive till adulthood

  15. In the 80s/90s we used these every week, both primary and secondary school.

My kids had/have them in their primary and have never used them once.

  16. Was in primary from 1998 to 2005 (including nursery), and we used this all the time.

  17. Im 40 from a shit estate in Manchester, and know about the apparatus 😅

  18. Went to school between 03 and 08. When r/TheApparatus was unfolded from the wall you knew it was a rare and special day.

  19. I was born in the 80s and got to use this and the rope, and there was the vaulting box as well. I loved PE!

  20. 90s primary school kid. Tuesdays was an apparatus day where these got pulled out and Thursdays was sports pe day. Plenty of broken arms and building of purr grit in the 90s!

  21. The most we ever got to do was turn the benches upside down and walk along them… IYKYK

  22. We had one of these in my primary school. I can count on one hand the amount of times we used it

  23. Oh we did this in the 70s and 80s. The rack and the horse were lethal. It’s a wonder there weren’t more paraplegics due to school gymnastics.
