Hello,
I am a tourist from Japan and have rented a car to travel around Norway for a couple of weeks.
Yesterday, I damaged the car in a parking lot. The damage is clearly visible but not critical, in the sense that I can continue my trip safely.

However, I’m very worried that I might be charged an extremely high amount for the repairs. It would be difficult for me to pay more than $5,000 USD on the spot.

My questions are:

  • Should I report the damage immediately?
  • How much do you think I might be charged?

Here is some information about the car:

  • Car Rental: Hertz (Oslo Gardermoen Airport)
  • Car Model: Volkswagen ID.3 (Electric Vehicle)
  • Japanese Credit Card for security deposit
  • Booked through AutoEurope
  • HDAE Basic Rental with Insurance: CDW, THP

Attached are some photos of the damage. It happened in a parking lot, and no other vehicles or people were involved.

I don't think so but is there anything at this point that I can do to minimize the amount of money I will be charged?

  1. I would just wait until the car is returned, report it and give them my insurance info. The damage should be handled by the rental company’s car insurance, and the deductible by your travel insurance.

  2. Since you insured it with a CDW, this caps the amount they can charge you. Look at your contract, but usually the amount you have to pay in case of damages is around 1000$/€.

  3. Check your rental contract and the insurance conditions. The usual thing is you’d have to pay a deductible and the insurance would cover the rest of the cost.

Usually, the rental company and insurance ask that you report the damage at once, but IMO I can’t really see that being an advantage to you. You might as well call them on the last day and say it just happened before returning the car.

  4. I think it’s not that bad. It look like you have only destroyed the plastic part. Maybe you should ask in 2 or 3 car workshop how many that will cost to you, the point is to don’t be fooled by the car rental company.

  5. From the hertz site

    > Collision and theft insurance (CDW+TP)
If you are unlucky and damage your rental car, the deductible without insurance can be very high. With this deductible insurance included, the deductible for collision/fire/theft/vandalism is reduced to up to NOK 20,000, regardless of car type.

    > CDW+TP deductible (applies to all car groups in Norway)
Collision and theft/vandalism – up to NOK 20,000 per claim
Fire – up to NOK 20,000 per claim
Windshield damage – up to NOK 20,000 per claim

  6. You will be charged the maximum CDW amount (20,000nok?). If you have travel insurance or a credit card that covers hire car CDW deductible, then you can claim that money back from them.

  7. Don’t worry, small damage is unlikely to be a problem

  8. Just find a good deal in a garage there and repair it by yourself it is the best way
