Ukraine maintains a presence in Kursk, its military has said, despite Moscow claiming it has defeated the incursion into its territory.

This morning, Kyiv said its forces have been fighting in the region over the past 24 hours.

Posting on the Telegram messaging app, the military said Ukrainian troops have fought off Russian attacks and come under fire from artillery and air-dropped bombs.

The region’s governor said Ukraine attacked a power substation, with power cut off to about 15,000 people in the town of Rylsk.

Alexander Khinshtein posted on Telegram: “Dear residents, the enemy, in its agony, is continuing to launch strikes against our territory.”

Residents were evacuated from areas near the border as Ukrainian drone attacks over the past day became “more frequent”, the local administration said today.

Vladimir Putin visited the region in March, in a bid to show the territory was under control – watch here:

For context: Ukraine made a surprise offensive into Kursk in August last year, hoping to shift the momentum in the war.

Kyiv also hoped it would draw Russian troops away from other parts of Ukraine and give it a bargaining chip.

But Russia’s top general said last month Ukrainian troops had been ejected from the territory, ending the biggest incursion into Russian territory since the Second World War.

He also claimed Russia is carving out a buffer zone in the neighbouring Ukrainian region of Sumy.
