EUROPE: The national railways of Romania and Moldova have signed a memorandum of understanding for cross-border co-operation which includes reopening of the Fălciu – Prut (Cantemir) railway, electrification of the Iași – Chișinău line, modernisation of customs facilities at Ungheni and the resumption of Cahul – Galați passenger services.

The international bridge over the River Prut at Fălciu closed in 1992, but the Zorleni – Fălciu – Moldovan border line on the Romanian side was reopened in March 2022 to support the transport of Ukrainian refugees. In January 2025 a ministerial meeting organised by the European Commission’s DG Move decided to completely rebuild the railway in the cross-border area.

Rehabilitation works are under way on the bridge, and on the Moldovan side CFM will rehabilitate the 1·8 km of line to Prut station by August this year.
