Does anyone bother looking up and entering their correct insurance details for motor tax? I’ve never done it. Why do they even ask for this?

  1. Because to tax your car you have to have a valid insurance policy

But it looks like the system doesn’t even check it

  2. Seems easy enough to head out to the car, check the insurance on the windscreen and put it in the website. Maybe just me?

  3. My policy details are in the locker beside my bed with the rest of my important documents. Takes like 60 seconds to get this done. You’re kinda lazy, or extremely disorganised

  4. From what I’ve heard the plan was to link up motor tax and insurance to a public database, much like the UK. But I believe they’re having a lot of trouble with the legislation end of things.

  5. I had no idea you could put in BS details. Always a pain going out taking a pic of my insurance disc. Thanks for the tip!

  6. When they set it up, the plan was to spot check a handful (I think one in 15) and pursue any incorrect ones they found. I’m not sure if they still do that.

  7. the annoying thing is when the company is a subsidiary, like boxymo (it takes effort to find which is the parent company from that list) or when there’s several different ones under the same one, like with Allianz (allianz, allianz ireland, etc). It should just be policy number and then a confirmation being shown that it’s the right company. elementary database skills.

  8. Could be that if you have no insurance then you are committing fraud by filling it in.

Some people might be OK with “forgetting” to renew their insurance, but they might not want to take the next step of blatantly lying about it.

It feels a lot easier to just type 1234567890 when you actually have insurance.

  9. That’s all very well until the ‘excrement hits the extractor’ and people are looking for details etc. – a case then could be made that you did not tax the ‘motor’ (Car) correctly.

  10. This data is apperantly available to the gaurds. I was stopped once when the plate reading showed my insurance was out b/c dates didn’t match and he told me something along the lines of it showed b/c I had changed policies and tax didn’t have my new insurance as it didn’t update it on tax file yet

    edit adding more details.

  11. My insurance policy number has been 1234567 for many years now. Such a coincidence! Honestly I think it’s pointless relying on public to share information, if you want it correct – get it directly from the source (hint… the insurers)

  12. I assumed there was an actual check behind it so I always entered the valid details. Didn’t know it would accept shite.

  13. I do that all the time, I do have insurance, but couldn’t be bothered going to look for the cert or write down the details from the disc. Just enter any company, any date, and random numbers for the policy. Job done!👍👍

  14. Even though I’m now tempted not to do it I’m probably going to still do it “just in case” it’s actually used for anything.
