Trump removes US National Security Advisor Waltz in first major shakeup of new administration

There’ve been rumors all day that Mike Waltz was seeing to leave his post, but the White House has said that it wasn’t going to comment on anonymous sources and the also is a saying that nothing’s 100% official until it comes from Donald Trump. Well, it came from Donald Trump shortly after 2 p.m. in the afternoon, Donald Trump posting on Truth Social. I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform, on the battlefield, in Congress, and as my national security adviser, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our nation’s interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role. In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Adviser while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Now, we are hearing from sources that Mike Wal had been told earlier this week that the gig was up and he’s been trying to fight it for the last couple of days. He was notably quiet at the cabinet meeting and of course praised Donald Trump but didn’t really go much further than that. Uh and he was seen on campus at the West Wing today. But of course the damage to his uh to his uh job was basically done after the signal gate uh fiasco which basically saw a a a US journalist put into a high level talk about uh classified plans. as the White House says they were not classified, but the uh various national security officials that I’ve spoken to from previous administrations uh say that those kind of levels would have been classified. Uh but uh his basically his job never really recovered from that really. He uh was there was a real sense that he was on borrowed time. Uh and he is now the first person to leave the Trump administration uh after 102 days. Now Donald Trump went through four national security advisers in his first term. Uh but it is uh seen uh now that he potentially is staved off the exit of Pete Hexath, the Department of Defense head uh the Secretary of Defense who had indeed also been on that signal chat as well. Also expected to leave is Mike Walter’s deputy, Alex Wong, uh who also had a hand in that signal, Gates Messine. Uh quick uh aside, Laura Loomer, who’s a right-wing uh a right-wing influencer, had met with Donald Trump in the Oval Office a couple of weeks ago and railed against the National Security Council, including Mike Waltz and Alex Wong, uh and said that they were uh not loyal and undermining Donald Trump’s authority. Well, when she found out about this, she said scalped uh on her on her Twitter feed and said that uh he had been lumored. So, uh some high-profile departures. Uh but the Democrats for their part believe that this is just going to be the first of many over the course of the next few weeks, months, and years.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday named Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting national security adviser, replacing Mike Waltz, who is stepping down following a leak scandal involving a Signal chat that disclosed details of US air strikes on Yemen. Trump said he would nominate Waltz to be the next US ambassador to the United Nations.
