Recently visited finland and bought (what I believed) to be a handline. Handline fishing isnt popular here in ireland so I’m curious to see if I was correct. If so could anyone fill me into what this is. Saw them all over lapland.

  1. A+ for creativity, but thats actually a puikkari. A tool used for collecting fishing nets from water, or for setting them in water. Its a tool for fishing nets.

  2. Pretty sure that’s meant for collecting fishing nets.

  3. When raising the fishing net from the water, you hold this in one hand, grab the upper edge of the net about 1m at a time with your other hand, and put it over the sharp end. Then you grab the next 1m and repeat.

When laying out the net you do the opposite. This helps against entanglement and makes the net easier to lift and handle.

  4. Yes, you use it to pick up a fishng net from the water and to handle the net without making a mess.

  5. My father fished with nets and he used that tool to lift the nets out of the water. I also have done it with my dad. Yeah, it is “puikkari” in Finnish.
