News broke today that British volunteer and EOD technician Chris Garrett, callsign Swampy, was killed near Izium.

Chris was a titan in the Ukraine volunteer community, dating back to the Anti-Terrorism Operation in 2014. He returned to the work just before the full-scale war broke out in 2022.

There are better people than me to talk about all he did and all he was. I'll leave that to them. I hope they'll feel welcome to do so here.

His loss is keenly felt, and will be for some time. A lot of hearts are hurting today. Our own hearts go out to his family, his friends, his colleagues, and the volunteers who knew him.

Chris was the founder and chairman of Prevail, a 501c3 which provides EOD, UXO, trauma care, and humanitarian aid. We plan to run a fundraiser for Prevail in his honor. We're working out the details. Please consider donating when the time comes.

  1. Swampy dedicated his life clearing Ukraine from the mines that Russia left behind. He wanted to make it safe for Ukraine’s people again.
    The importance of what he did cannot be overstated.

  12. Oh no. I was fortunate enough to meet him about 2 years ago near Bakhmut. He left a huge impression. He was a natural leader and had tremendous dedication to the cause.
