Hi all,

I’m writing an investigative piece on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico and his increasingly controversial foreign policy direction. As Finland recently joined NATO and shares a direct border with Russia, I’d be very interested in hearing how Finns perceive what’s happening in Central Europe.

Since returning to power, Fico has:

  • Ended all military support to Ukraine

  • Attended Russia’s Victory Day Parade alongside Putin

  • Was blocked from flying through Baltic airspace

  • Introduced legislation critics say resembles Russian policies

  • Publicly blamed the West and NATO for the ongoing conflict

Some analysts are calling him “Moscow’s man inside the EU.”

From a Finnish perspective — is this seen as a serious geopolitical concern, or more internal Slovak drama?
Does this kind of shift affect how you view EU cohesion or regional security?

Happy to share the full article if anyone’s interested. Would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I’m not familiar enough with Slovakia to have a well informed opinion, though I can’t help but to wonder what is the appeal of Russia for these central and eastern European countries.

  2. For me, they fall into the same category as Hungary. A country with a lot of potential but with the current leader the only direction is downhill.

  3. As a Hungarian in Finland, I dont really care. Slovakian politics has long seemed extremely fickle, to the point where I don’t expect Fico to last another term

  4. Hungary and Poland before they had an election are/were talked about for being pro Russia. The smaller countries turning pro Russia is worrying, but isn’t talked about as much.

  5. I’m very interested in this topic. I am very confused why a country that has seen up close the monstrosity that Soviet Union and Russia have been to and probably always will be, a country that’s in the EU and NATO, would elect someone like Fico to run the country in any position. He is a national security threat and A Russian Trojan horse. He is probably gaining financially from Russia and seems very corrupt.

In short: the impression this gives is that Fico is heavily corrupted and personally paid by Russia, makes Slovakia look like a backwards Soviet /Russian satellite that can not let got of its Communist past, feels nostalgic about it and is willing to be associated more with being an Eastern European and Soviet satellite country in the 1980s sense than a modern and progressive EU country.
    Only negative associations unfortunately.

  6. Its your bed to make. Just remember that you are the ones to sleep in it for the future.
