Yesterday in Prague, Czechia and South Korea signed a series of strategic documents aimed at strengthening cooperation in the areas of modern industry, research and energy. However, the planned signing of the contract with KHNP has not taken place.

Strengthening the involvement of Czech companies

The signing of several agreements and arrangements, including contracts for future projects, was crucial. These represent a key step in preparing for the construction of a new nuclear power plant at Dukovany. In this regard, nine future contracts and three memoranda of understanding have been concluded. The Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade emphasised the significance of these agreements, particularly in strengthening the involvement of Czech industry in the project.

“What is important at the moment is that we are doing everything we can to move forward immediately after the court’s decision,” said Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček, referring to the decision, which blocked ČEZ from signing the contract because of the complaint of EDF.

Among the most important agreements are the framework agreement for the comprehensive supply of the turbine hall and the contract for the supply of the steam turbine between Škoda Power, KHNP and Doosan. This part of the project, which is highly technology-intensive, may account for up to 15-20 per cent of the total contract volume and will enable the involvement of several other companies within the Škoda Doosan Power subcontracting chain.

Nuclear cooperation agreement

The Agreement on Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy was also signed, which will strengthen the partnership between the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Korean Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy. The document aims to develop cooperation in the areas of nuclear safety, licensing, fuel cycle, research and development, sharing of experience and other areas.
